5 Ways to Repair Bad Credit

By Richard Lakin

Having bad credit means that you're like many other people in the world and you know how devastating its effects can be. Luckily it is almost as easy to bring your credit score up as it was to bring it down. It can be somewhat simple with a plan set into motion. You can restore your credit rating but you will have to work at it. Follow these five steps to start you on the right track to repair your credit.

1. Get a hold of your credit report

You need a starting point, which will need to be seeing your credit history. To do that you will need to first obtain your credit report. Did you know that you are legally bound to receive a free credit report from each credit report agency? That's right, no cost to you at all and you can, and should get one every year. Rather you want to or not, it is essential that you know all the facts. Many people would rather have the wool pulled over their eyes and accept that nothing is wrong. However, if you are serious about purchasing a house or getting your finances straightened out, then you have no other option than to see the report first-hand.

2. Bring all accounts current

The first thing you can do to move in the right direction is to move all of your accounts into a current, paid state. Nothing hurts your credit score worse than having accounts that you have just neglected. Each month that passes, your score will take another hit. There's no quick bad credit fix, but this will get you on the right track and make you more focused on what has to be done.

Step Three: Close out Unused Accounts

Once all of your accounts are paid to date, you need to close them. Time will allow for you to pay off bad debt that is outstanding. You are on your way to fixing your credit by this point. Destroy your credit cards when those accounts are closed.

4. Try to acquire some small line of credit

Though it might not seem like the most conventional way of doing things, you are going to want to get a hold of a new credit line. This does not mean that you need to go get a big credit card. Once you get your credit back into decent standing, lots of lenders will be looking to get their products out to you. Try a small credit card and use it sparingly, only so that you can make all of the payments on time. This will begin to establish a new record of good standing and it will be the first step in the road to fixing your credit.

5. Time heals all

Even financial mistakes are healed with the passage of time. Seven years is all it takes to clear your record of today's debt nightmare. While this may seem infinite, it will pass before you know it. If you start being more responsible with your finances now, then your credit will be better before you know it.
