T-Mobile Unveils the T-Mobile G1 - The First Android Smartphone

T-Mobile today announced the launch of the world’s first Android-powered mobile phone in partnership with Google. Available soon for T-Mobile customers spanning two continents, the T-Mobile G1 combines full touch-screen functionality and a QWERTY keyboard with a mobile Web experience that includes the Google Maps Street View, Gmail, YouTube and others.

T-Mobile customers in the U.S. have the opportunity to pre-order the T-Mobile G1, in limited quantities, beginning today at www.T-MobileG1.com. The device will be available at select T-Mobile retail stores and online in the U.S. beginning Oct. 22, for a price of $179 with a two-year voice and data agreement. The T-Mobile G1 will also be available in the United Kingdom beginning in November, and across Europe in the first quarter of 2009. Countries include Germany, Austria, Czech Republic and the Netherlands.

The T-Mobile G1 features a rich HTML e-mail client, which seamlessly syncs your e-mail, calendar and contacts from Gmail as well as most other POP3 or IMAP e-mail services. The T-Mobile G1 multitasks, so you can read a Web page while also downloading your e-mail in the background. It combines Instant Messaging support for Google Talk, as well as AOL, Yahoo! Messenger and Windows Live Messenger in the U.S.

With Google Maps, Google’s groundbreaking maps service, T-Mobile G1 users can instantly view maps and satellite imagery, as well as find local business and get driving directions, all from the phone’s easy-to-use touch interface. Motorola Unveils MOTOMAGX Mobile Linux Platform

Mobile Linux leader offers developers the complete package -- an open platform, frameworks, tools and support -- to unleash the next generation of mobile device experiences

LINUXWORLD – SAN FRANCISCO – 7 August 2007 – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced a significant step in its commitment to mobile Linux® and rich experience creation by introducing MOTOMAGX, its next generation mobile Linux platform. Building on the global success of Motorola's earlier Linux-based platforms, MOTOMAGX lays the foundation to deliver new levels of openness, flexibility and support for third-party applications on Motorola mobile devices.

A leader in mobile Linux, Motorola has sold more than 9 million Linux-based handsets worldwide -- and this is just the beginning. In the next few years, up to 60% of Motorola’s handset portfolio is expected to be based on Linux, with the MOTOMAGX platform playing a key role in supporting this strategy. Offering unmatched innovation driven by a robust developer ecosystem, Motorola has chosen Linux to deliver the rich, new experiences that consumers crave. This is evident in the first products based on the MOTOMAGX platform: the music-optimized MOTOROKR Z6 and the Motorola RAZR2 V8 handsets, available now in select markets worldwide. The RAZR2 V8 will be Motorola’s first Linux-based device bound for North America, representing another milestone in the company’s global mobile Linux leadership.

“At Motorola, we know that software is just as important as hardware -- through the introduction of our MOTOMAGX platform, we are reinforcing our firm commitment to Linux and empowering our developer community to innovate with us in exciting new ways,” said Alain Mutricy, senior vice president, platform technology, Motorola Mobile Devices business.

New Developer Tools = New Mobile Experiences
Motorola’s MOTOMAGX platform is designed to support a broad array of content created by third-party developers. Today, MOTOMAGX supports applications developed in Java ME™, with plans to introduce new WebUI (featuring web technology to enable widgets and Web 2.0 experiences) and native Linux application environments in upcoming releases. These three application environments, combined with the relevant tools available through Motorola's MOTODEV Studio integrated development environment, will help enable MOTODEV developers to innovate and accelerate time to market for their applications.

To further enable developers to take advantage of application development opportunities in mobile, Motorola announced today a global series of MOTODEV Summits -- exclusive, one-day events that offer developers technical expertise, practical advice, guidance, and a sneak peek at the next generation of Motorola devices, platforms and technology -- including MOTOMAGX.

“MOTOMAGX, when paired with the tools and support from our MOTODEV Developer network, provides a powerful platform for innovation -- making it easier and faster for developers to create new applications for our mobile devices,” said Christy Wyatt, vice president, ecosystem and market development, Motorola. “This opens exciting possibilities for what tomorrow's mobile applications will be able to do and the new device experiences they will support."

Developers interested in creating applications for the MOTOMAGX platform using Java ME can do so today by downloading the MOTODEV Studio for Java ME application development environment at www.motorola.com/developer. WebUI and native Linux plug-ins for MOTODEV Studio are expected to be available to select developers by the end of Q4 2007.

“Motorola is helping to mobilize Web 2.0 content and services through the introduction of their WebUI application environment within MOTOMAGX,” said Ojas Rege, vice president of mobile products, Yahoo!. “We believe these types of platforms will enable developers to deliver compelling applications that play across an array of Motorola devices and help to continue to grow the marketplace for innovative mobile Internet services."

Travis Boatman, vice president of worldwide studios at EA Mobile said, “As the global leader in mobile games, EA Mobile prioritizes applications that can be used across the industry’s most common platforms. Motorola is leading in mobile Linux and we applaud their launch of the MOTOMAGX platform with its associated application environments and toolsets. We look forward to working with Motorola to bring exciting entertainment experiences to mobile users worldwide.”

Visit Motorola at LinuxWorld
Developers interested in learning more about opportunities on the MOTOMAGX platform and other platforms supported by Motorola are invited to visit our booth (#916) at LinuxWorld, being held this week at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.

Additionally, Motorola will provide exclusive content and networking opportunities to developers as part of its Fast Track with MOTODEV event. The event program is comprised of sessions designed to help developers target mobile ecosystem opportunities and leverage Motorola’s integrated development environment, including tools, resources and programs, to help bring their mobile applications to market. The event will be held Wednesday, August 8 from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. in Room 303 of the Moscone Center. MOTODEV members receive complimentary admission to the Fast Track event (a $95 value) by entering promotion code MOTO when registering for their LinuxWorld conference badge.

LG Kc910 Reviews

Author: Matt Sharp

Recently announced, and due to be released in October, the LG KC910 Renoir promises to set the world alight, since... well... the world of camera-equipped mobile phones just got a new messiah!

A rich heritage - the LG Viewty
In 2007, a handset came out that shocked everyone involved with mobile phones. We all kind of knew it would do well, but we didn't expect it to do as well as it did. That phone was the LG Viewty, and it offered the most amazing camera, and the most wow-factor, of any mobile phones on the market at that time. Everyone predicted people would warm to it, because this beauty from LG was just so...

Well, different to other mobile phones on the market. A full touchscreen interface, a 5 megapixel camera (a rarity in them days), and masses upon masses of cool stuff. But what really made the public pick it up and run with it was its outright, sheer, unadulterated wow factor. It just OOZED cool, and people went for it in a big way. The thing that surprised (and is still surprising us), is that, believe it or not, if you look at the current list of top-ten mobile phones, the year-old Viewty is still in it!

But it won't last forever, and it's time for the LG Viewty to hand on the baton. It needs a special mobile phone to pass it on to, and that's what it gets in the LG KC910 Renoir.

Shattering the 8 megapixel barrier, with the LG KC910 Renoir.
You can clearly see the ancestry of the Viewty, when you look at the LG KC910 Renoir. The two mobile phones share similar sleek looks, and the Flash-based, touchscreen interface of the LG KC910 Renoir is a direct evolution of the Viewty's. Both mobile phones have loads of multimedia options, both have a system optimised for touch control, but the newer LG KC910 Renoir takes on a new camera.

And, oh dear lord, what a camera it is, weighing in at an unbelievable 8 megapixels! So, it's going to sharper and crisper than anything you've ever see before, but the fun doesn't end there. As it is easily one of the highest spec mobile phones in the world, the LG KC910 Renoir also has more features than, for example, NASA and more power than a small South American country.

Night modes, xenon flash, manual focus, and the piece de resistance, the slow-mo video from the Viewty, and the high-speed, time-lapse video from the LG Secret. The LG KC910 Renoir also has the features that are becoming commonplace among modern mobile phones: WiFi, HSDPA, GPS and so on.

Can the LG KC910 Renoir really live up to the legacy of the Viewty?
It's a lot to ask of it, really, isn't it... The Viewty is still a big seller even now, a year after its launch, and it's easily the most successful mobile phone LG have ever made. So, the LG KC910 Renoir really does have a lot to live up to. The crucial question is, can it do it?

Well, it's certainly got the edge over all the other mobile phones that are due out before Christmas. ok, sure, there are some other 8 megapixel mobile phones due out, but none of them are as slim as the LG KC910 Renoir, and none of the others have a touchscreen. Or slow-motion video. Or those sleek looks.

And knowing LG, they'll probably make sure the price of the LG KC910 Renoir isn't too over the top, as they did with the Viewty, to make it even more appealing. It remains to be seen whether it can grab the same success, and attract the same love, as that groundbreaker, but one thing's for sure: the LG KC910 Renoir has got the potential to kick its rivals in the world of mobile phones right out of the park!

Android Makes its Debut in T-Mobile G1

After less than a year since the initial Android announcement, T-Mobile USA launches today the first handset that uses Android’s software stack: a smartphone built by HTC, which is known for manufacturing Windows Mobile portable devices.

T-Mobile G1 showcases some of the most advanced capabilities of Android, by including a touchscreen, QWERTY keyboard, accelerated 3D graphics, Wi-Fi and 3G support, GPS and accelerometer. The device won’t have an impressive design and it won’t be as easy to use as an iPhone, but it will certainly be able to run a lot of interesting applications.

Android’s marketplace will accept any applications without a preliminary review, so that users decide whether they’re useful. That means Angelo DiNardi’s MailWrangler application won’t be rejected because it duplicates the functionality from a built-in application. “Developers will be able to make their content available on an open service hosted by Google that features a feedback and rating system similar to YouTube. (…) Content can debut in the marketplace after only three simple steps: register as a merchant, upload and describe your content and publish it,” explains Android’s blog.

Even if the first device fails to impress, it will still be a success because Android pushes the boundaries further. “Consumers will see cheaper and more innovative mobile devices and services, which will inevitably feature more engaging, easier-to-use interfaces - as well as a rich portfolio of applications,” envisions Open Handset Alliance’s FAQ.

We will find more at 10:30 a.m. EDT, when T-Mobile and Google will announce the device in a press conference webcasted live.

Update. HTC has more information about the device:

Processor: Qualcomm MSM7201A, 528 MHz
Size: 117.7 mm x 55.7 mm x 17.1 mm (4.60 in x 2.16 in x 0.62 in)
Weight: 158 grams (5.57 ounces)
Display: 3.2-inch TFT-LCD flat touch-sensitive screen with 320 x 480 (HVGA) resolution
Camera: 3.2 megapixel color camera with fixed focus
Battery: Rechargeable Lithium-ion battery, 1150 mAh
Talk Time: 406 minutes
Standby Time: 319 hours
Memory: microSD memory card, 1 GB included
Special features: Digital Compass, Motion Sensor

Update 2: CrunchGear informs that Amazon’s MP3 music store will be preloaded on the device. “T-Mobile G1 users can search, download, buy and play music from Amazon MP3, which offers over 6 million DRM-free MP3 songs. (…) Downloading music from Amazon MP3 using the T-Mobile G1 requires a Wi-Fi connection but searching, browsing, listening to samples and buying MP3s can be done wherever customers are connected to the T-Mobile network.”

Update 3. More details from T-Mobile’s press release: three color options (white, brown and black); music player that supports MP3, M4A (iTunes AAC, DRM-free), AMR, WMA, MIDI, WAV, OGG Vorbis; pre-installed 1 GB Micro SD memory card; built-in instant messaging client with support for Google Talk, AOL, Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger.

Update 4: The phone costs from $179.99 to $399.99, it’s locked in the T-Mobile network and it requires a 2-year subscription and a data plan that costs $25 or $35, depending on the number of messages included. T-Mobile customers from the US can pre-order the phone starting from today, but the phone will be available in stores from October 22. T-Mobile promises to launch G1 in the UK one month later and in the first quarter of 2009, for the rest of Europe.

Update 5: The entire press conference showed a surprising lack of enthusiasm until Larry Page and Sergey Brin came on stage. There were very few interesting questions about the device: we found that G1 is targeted to consumers, it doesn’t support Exchange and there’s no way to buy it unlocked.

Update 6. T-Mobile G1 tour (the most exciting phone in the history of phones?):

Update 7. An overview of Google’s services connected to G1: search, Google Maps, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Talk, Contacts, YouTube. There’s too much Google integration: the phone even has a Google logo on the back.

Update 8: android.com is now live and it shows an interesting video about running multiple applications in Android:

This playlist highlights some cool G1 features, including the not-yet-available-in-iPhone copy & paste.

Nokia 3120 Classic Review

Author: Caroline Telford

Somehow, in a world where mobile phones continuously seem to aspire to become everything possible, from camera and music player, to internet portal and games console, the Nokia 3120 Classic somehow survives.

Perhaps mobile phone users are realising that with their previous mobile phones they only ended up using a tenth of the features that it possessed, or maybe they simply don't want to spend the better part of their monthly pay on a mobile phone. Whatever the case, the Nokia 3120 Classic offers an inexpensive, yet functional, option that is a little more than the average minimalist phone.

Features of the Nokia 3120
Classic Minimalist phones tend to change as time goes by, technology alters, and the very idea of what is minimalist morphs along with it. Was a time that the idea of a camera on a mobile phone was definitely not entry level, yet today every entry level phone, for the most part, has one.

So therefore it is of little surprise that with the Nokia 3120 Classic, 3G finally meets the minimalist entry level mobile phone. Truth is, this mobile phone isn't much of a slouch. With a 2 inch 16 million colour QVGA display, it is even rather attractive. Add to that the 2 megapixel camera that is sports and it actually seems more decent.

Admittedly without autofocus and at only 2 megapixels the image quality isn't exactly photography studio type, however it does get by and is really enough for most practical purposes. As for storage, with microSD capabilities, there is little, or no, problem as the Nokia 3120 Classic supports up to 8 GB of memory.

The finishing touch, and crowning glory of the Nokia 3120 Classic is its 3G support. By enabling this little wonder to facilitate video calls and other 3G features, Nokia automatically elevated it up a notch compared to competition. With the entry of 3G into the entry level market, small pun intended, phones of this nature offer up the basic 3G features in affordable packages.

New Age of Entry Level Mobile Phones
While it may be a bit premature to herald a new age of entry level mobile phones, as the Nokia 3120 Classic is priced a slight bit higher than other mobile phone deals, it certainly does seem to signify that 3G will be the next small step forward as far as that market is concerned. At least, Nokia seem to think so, and they've gotten many things right in the past.

For any current user or prospective user, the Nokia 3120 Classic is an elegant little phone that can offer up some great features with its 3G and 2.0 megapixel camera, but at the same time remain affordable.

Time will tell as to whether other mobile phones similarly emulate the Nokia 3120 Classic, yet for now it remains distinguishable from competition, and a step ahead in terms of vision. At this rate, entry level mobile phones may end up having 5.0 megapixel cameras attached in no time.
