Chronic joint pain can be caused by a wide variety of ailments such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, allergies, or lupus. Some discomfort can be due to degenerative conditions such as arthritis or merely a symptom of another condition not particularly related to the joints such as allergy inflammation. Everyone from children to adults can experience some measure of problems for any number of reasons, but middle aged to older adults are generally the most likely to suffer with the condition. There are many treatments for chronic joint pain relief that can be used to address the underlying causes of discomfort or there are several treatments that can be used to address only acute painful episodes. "Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise." (Jeremiah 17:14)
The most common cause of over half of patients that complain about painful joints is a result of some form of arthritis. Arthritis is a degenerative condition that causes progressive damage to hips, knees, shoulders and backs in particular. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of the disease and is found in a large segment of society, particularly those over 50. It is so common, in fact, that most people expect to develop symptoms at some point in their lives and generally attribute aches and pains to arthritis without ever having a diagnosis from a doctor. Cartilage that separates the bones at the joints begins to degenerate as a result of osteoarthritis. The bones begin to wear against each other causing increased stiffness and chronic joint pain in the sufferers to the point that some people are unable to enjoy complete mobility or freedom of movement.
Although osteoarthritis is the most common form of the disease to affect joints, rheumatoid arthritis also affects a significant amount of patients. Rheumatoid arthritis is an immune dysfunction that affects the lining of the joints and causes severe, progressive health problems. Women are most likely to require some form of chronic joint pain relief as a result of this illness. Both types of arthritis differ in symptoms and chronic joint pain relief treatments as compared to other causes of problems such as injury, allergies or other illnesses. Physical therapy is a good form of treatment that is helpful in protecting and increasing range of motion for patients as well as providing muscular support to joints. Patients who develop their lower back, neck and shoulder muscles are less likely to deal with severe backaches.
A balanced diet is important in maintaining a relatively pain-free management protocol. Patients who keep their weight at the acceptable range for their body type will experience less painful movements since extra weight puts strain on all the joints. Certain foods such as liver and sardines only aggravate conditions associated with arthritis such as gout. A healthy diet can significantly lower discomfort while helping to repair or maintain joints. Medications are commonly used to provide chronic joint pain relief for many people. Various forms of steroids, analgesics, ibuprofen and other medicines are used for their anti-inflammatory properties or pain-suppressant effects on chronic joint pain in patients. Medications can have side effects, so it is important to make an informed decision before beginning any treatment regimen.
Some medical practitioners also suggest natural remedies that can help repair cartilage and deal with the underlying causes of painful joints. Supplements such as Vitamin D, antioxidants, glucosamine, chondroitin and bromelain are some of the more widely used natural remedies that can be added to anyone's diet. Research has shown that Vitamin D can slow down the progression of arthritis. The antioxidants A, C and E as well as the mineral selenium have been shown to slow damage and repair cartilage in patients. Glucosamine and chondriotin are popular supplements that are touted for their ability to regenerate cartilage and diminish the chronic joint pain associated with osteoarthritis. Bromelain is an enzyme which offers anti-inflammatory properties and can help reduce the swelling and discomfort of joints as well. There are many ways to address the complicated physical discomfort of joints through natural or synthetic medications that are prescribed on the advice of a physician or medical practitioner.
