A college degree for life experience is cost effective and takes less time to achieve than traditional college degrees, but there are some major factors to consider. In order to qualify for this degree, the student will need to have work experience, prior college, or life experience that would qualify as relevant to the field they wish to work in. For example, a web designer would tell his prospective school of the class work he did at another university, the web design business he currently runs, and all the other web pages he has ever designed. This may qualify him for this life experience degree, depending on the criteria of the university he wishes to graduate from.
Many people wonder if this type of education is actually a valid program or degree. There are some people who obtain a college degree for life experience that experience some difficulty in getting a job. While this may be similar with other programs, life experience degrees are often unfamiliar to employers or companies. The individual may need to take some time to explain to various people what the degree is all about and the course of action they needed to take in order to achieve this degree.
This can provide great opportunities for many different people. A college degree for life experience can enhance a persons portfolio at work and allow for the boss to see what the individual is capable of. It can also help a person who is already in the workforce and does not have time to go back to school to get a degree. Of course this would mean that this person would have to have substantial life experience to replace a formal education.
As with any education decision, the student should start by creating a list of schools that appeal to them and research each to decide which one is right. It is important to ask the 'worst case scenario' questions to see how the institution would handle the situation. This will probably eliminate schools that may become a problem in the future. This would include job placement, unexpected circumstances (such as a death in the family), and school financing. This is a big decision to make. A student must pray that God leads them in the direction He wants them to go. "Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore" (Psalm 16:11). They should pray that God makes the choice clear in their mind and heart, and He provides the strength to stand with the decision to pursue a college degree for life experience.
