Mailimg List

What is Mailimg List?

A mailing list is a collection of names and addresses used by an individual or an organization to send material to multiple recipients. The term is often extended to include the people subscribed to such a list, so the group of subscribers is referred to as "the mailing list", or simply "the list".

At least two quite different types of mailing lists can be defined: the first one is closer to the literal sense, where a "mailing list" of people is used as a recipient for newsletters, periodicals or advertising. Traditionally this was done through the postal system, but with the rise of e-mail, the electronic mailing list became popular. The second type allows members to post their own items which are broadcast to all of the other mailing list members.

When similar or identical material is sent out to all subscribers on a mailing list, it is often referred to as a mailshot or blast. A list for such use can also be referred to as a distribution list.

In legitimate (non-spam) mailing lists, individuals can subscribe or unsubscribe themselves.

Mailing lists are often rented or sold. If rented, the renter agrees to use the mailing list for only contractually agreed-upon times. The mailing list owner typically enforces this by "salting" the mailing list with fake addresses and creating new salts for each time the list is rented. Unscrupulous renters may attempt to bypass salts by renting several lists and merging them to find the common, valid addresses.

Mailing list brokers exist to help organizations rent their lists. For some organizations, such as specialized niche publications or charitable groups, their lists may be some of their most valuable assets, and mailing list brokers help them maximize the value of their lists.

Mailing list is simply a list of e-mail addresses of people that are interested in the same subject, are members of the same work group, or who are taking class together. When a member of the list sends a note to the group's special address, the e-mail is broadcast to all of the members of the list. The key advantage of a mailing list over a things such as web-based discussion is that as new message becomes available they are immediately delivered to the participants' mailboxes.

Reliable list brokers can be found through most mail order/direct marketing associations.

How Do I Buy a Great Mailing List?

1. Before you go about finding that great mailing list for your marketing campaign, you need to define your audience. Precisely who is your market? The more precisely you can define your perfect target audience, the better you'll be able to segment your mailing, and the better your response will be.

2. It is an accepted acxiom in direct marketing that the closer to a consumers' last purchase you can reach them, the more apt they are to be responsive to your offer. Therefore, try to find a list that is updated and cleaned on a regular basis. An old list is more likely to have invalid records on it than a fresh one.

3. Select a reputable vendor to purchase (remember that lists are “bought” for one-time use only, unless multi-use arrangements have been negotiated beforehand) your list from. The most important criteria is to make sure that they are a member in good standing with the DMA (Direct Marketing Association). If you don't see the DMA logo displayed on their site, don't assume it is safe to use them. You can contact the DMA online at: www.the-dma.org.

4. Select a list that most closely mirrors your target audience. For example, if you are trying to sell gym memberships in your local area, make sure you target people who have demonstrated an interest in physical fitness and fall within any specific age, gender or income parameters you may have. Don't expect to appeal to just anyone.

5. Buy only what you can afford. It is important to test with direct mail. Your first try might not work, don't put all of your eggs in one basket.

6. Don't be afraid to raise your hand. Contact the vendor and ask for their suggestions as to what you should test. They are the professionals and can most likely save you a lot of time and frustration. The biggest decision you will have is whether or not to buy a Compiled List or a Response List.

How To Build A Relationship With Your Mailing List?

Here is the question on many email marketers' lips: how do you build a relationship with a mailing list and how do get it to be responsive? The answer is not cut and dry. Building a responsive list requires a certain mastery of key list relationship building principles.

Here are some of the key ones you must take note of:

1. Deliver on what you promise. If your sign-up incentive is a free ebook and a 7-day ecourse, then deliver the ebook and the 7-day ecourse. And if you say your newsletter is pitch-free, then do make sure it is pitch-free.

2. Do not overdo the sales pitches. You do have the right to send sales offers once in a while. After all, you are in this to make money. However, do keep them to a minimum of 4 times or less per month. Try to deliver at least 50% content, and 50% sales offers and you will be doing all right.

3. Send free gifts from time to time. Subscribers appreciate receiving free gifts in their email inbox, especially if the gifts are informative or/and valuable. Sending your subscribers free gifts builds trust.

4. Tell them stories. If you have a few interesting stories to tell, or you had something strange or exciting happened in your day, tell your subscribers about them. It builds a responsive list following that looks forward to your emails. If you are all business, your newsletter might be too boring for a few people.

Building a responsive list is about treating your subscribers like people instead of numbers and providing value for them. Just follow these key principles and you won't go wrong.
