Criminal Justice Degree

A criminal justice degree is a stepping stone for eligibility in the areas of law and law enforcement, correctional facilities, private industrial security and the court system. They give the graduate a chance to help serve the community by ways of intervention and corrections. The Lord God says in Job "Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty: For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole." (Job 5:17-18) It is biblical to correct and discipline, thus the creation of our judicial branch of government and criminal justice degrees to prepare men and women for this important duty to society.

According to what level of study one is at, this degree can come in the form of an Associate (2 years), a Bachelor (4 years), or a Masters. Each criminal justice degree program offers a broad understanding of the criminal justice system. It introduces law and legal procedures, criminal evidence, criminology, psychology, government, communications, policing, investigation, correction, juvenile services, and domestic violence situations. The program also reveals the legal and ethical issues that are relevant to the criminal justice profession and teaches students about the process of incarceration, the penal system, parole, probation and report writing.

There are many fields of law enforcement where criminal justice degrees are sought, whether a graduate is interested in working in the traditional police force, or desires to work in the courtroom applying administrative duties. Private industrial securities also prefer a graduate of this program when looking to hire security guards or officers, loss prevention specialists in private businesses or public buildings, and special security for protecting valuable intellectual information. In addition to private industry security, a criminal justice degree can be used to qualify for such positions as park ranger, game warden, compliance officer, health and safety inspector or crisis counselor.

If a graduate desires to enter the field of law enforcement, these degrees make it easier to qualify for admission into police academy. Police academy is an additional training program intended to fully prepare a prospective police officer for duty. Most states have enacted mandatory police academy training prior to the swearing in of their newest police officers. Criminal justice degrees offer a great source of information for those who want a deeper understanding of the American justice system. Many universities and colleges including distance learning schools offer this program. It is highly recommended that a student contact their academic counselor to begin the process of matching a criminal justice degree law enforcement program with future career goals.
