Custom Label Printing

Even before the Internet, custom label printing was a popular service offered through magazines and mailers. The convenience of this service allows people and businesses alike to buy stickers with their names and addresses printed neatly on them. This is great for people who are in a hurry or have sloppy handwriting. It's also perfect for businesses that need to do mass mailings. Not only are these labels used for mailings, many printers create labels for company products for brand labeling. Labeling has changed a lot in the past twenty years, though. With the personal computer technology boom, people can now print their own labels at home or on site at a business. Despite the competition of labeling software and special printer functions, label printing companies still have the upper hand. The quality of company printed labels usually far exceeds what a typical color printer and store-bought labels can create. Plus, businesses or organizations often make hundreds, if not thousands, of mailings and products each year. Printing so many on a PC printer can get expensive. Using a local or even national printer can save money without skimping on quality.

Businesses and non-profits have reputations to build or maintain. With every piece of mail and every product that goes out, they're making an impression on a potential or repeat customer. A clean letter in a nice envelope with a professional address label can definitely make or break a sale or support opportunity. Labels on a product container can also make or break a sale. Custom label printing is exactly what businesses need to make a great impression. Not only can they print in just about any professional looking font, businesses can choose any color and even have the company logo or other images on the label. For product labels, design options are practically limitless. Major brand labelers have been known to add 3D images to labels, scratch-n-sniff, and cut them to any shape desired. While some printer won't offer such options, the best printers will, but for a price. Businesses will need to determine what quantity they need, full color or black and white, the design of the sticker, and the shape in order to prepare for gathering quotes.

Quantity is extremely important when gathering quotes from label printing companies. If the quantity is high then the expense per label will be low. It's in the business' best interest to purchase as many labels as possible to get the most for its money. Plus, under a certain quantity, some printers cannot offer flexographic labels, for instance. Business owners will need to find out the printer's limitations and quantity minimums for certain types of printing before requesting a quote. Some printers will also need to know if the sticker will be in full color or not. Most printers today, though, offer full color as the standard, and the full color price has decreased considerably in recent years. It's also important to know if graphic design services are needed. Some businesses don't have a label design prepared and need to hire a printer with a graphic designer on site. The other option is to hire an independent graphic designer. Compare quotes with graphic design services and without those services to an independent designer. Deciding on the shape of the sticker is also important to the quote. Standard shapes include oval, circle, rectangle, and square. Other shapes, such as stars, crescents, or even the profile of a fish, may be considered special cuts and could cost more. Be specific about the shape when requesting the quote.

While the quote is very important to the decision of which printer will do the custom label printing, quality matters much more. The label needs to have a strong adhesive backing and be able to adhere despite exposure to moisture. The ink should not easily run when wet and the label itself should be resistant to tearing when wet. This is all especially important for product labels that go on refrigerated jars. Before ordering services with any printer, the business owner needs to request samples. These samples will be actual labels and stickers that the printer has completes for other companies. The samples will give the customer an idea of the different adhesive options, paper options, and sizes. There is no better way to compare quality between label printing companies. Another way to sample labels without waiting for samples to come in the mail is to look at a list of the printer's customers. Often it's not hard to find a recognizable brand name. "A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold." (Proverbs 22:1) Purchase one of their products and examine the sticker to see if the quality is good.

For product custom label printing, most printers will offer barcode printing. Yet, it is the business' responsibility to get the product a barcode number through the Uniform Product Code Council. From there, the printer will be able to create the barcode image. If the barcode is a necessary part of the label, be sure the printer can do it when getting a quote. Other services that a customer service representative can address include coating labels and choose adhesives to withstand certain conditions. Some labels are for products that will be used in extremely hot conditions, such as car batteries. Other products requiring labels will be in moist, cold conditions, such as cheese or drink products. The right printer will offer printing materials such as plastic or vinyl that can endure specific conditions. While many printer websites have instant quote calculators, quotes for some special labels may require the assistance of a customer service representative. When in doubt, the business owner should always ask questions and get as much information as possible. Only then can he make the best choice between label printing companies.
