Halloween Costume

A Halloween costume is on everyone's mind for the entire month of October as party invitations begin to arrive. Halloween costumes are one of the biggest elements of this holiday and people enjoy the opportunity to get dressed and play make believe. Many people throw elaborate costume parties inviting friends and family for an evening full of fun. Different outfits for this specific occasion can be extremely creative or scary depending on the person wearing the costume and with most parties, anything goes! However, costumes have gotten scarier and more terrifying each year. This is because the origin of Halloween started with that of the terrified humans who were afraid of evil spirits.

When exposed to something terrifying over the course of time, human nature becomes desensitized, and what was once horrid becomes quite normal. Halloween costumes of witches or goblins are considered as mild compared to some of the garb those who celebrate this holiday wear. These are not acceptable thoughts during any other time of the year, but Halloween makes a lot of different things acceptable. A Halloween costume can be associated with an evil spirit, a mummy, or a skeleton. Our culture has allowed the holiday to become fun and acceptable. Taking the Halloween Quiz can reveal important facts about the history of this much celebrated holiday.

But, when we take a close look at this holiday and some of the outfits worn by party goers, we must consider if dressing up as death is a good idea. And, it seems that every year the make believe characters worn by hundreds of party-goers are even more gruesome. Is it worth letting children even see a gruesome Halloween costume? This holiday represents satanic rituals and evil spirits that are played out in the Halloween costumes that different people choose. As Christians should we be representing such a holiday? Christians are called to overcome the workings of the dark and not to join them. "He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil." (1 John 1:8)

Christians should consider if taking part in this holiday is acceptable, at all. Participating in frightening activities and wearing Halloween costumes are bringing us to the place of support for the holiday. Christian carnivals have started allowing witch costumes to come in so that they can be politically correct. At what point do we take a stance against things that are wrong? We must make the effort to reject this holiday. For if we do not; then Satan is the winner. "Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God." (3 John 1:11)
