History Of Halloween

The history of Halloween is extremely intriguing, but not as simple a story as some have been lead to believe in recent years. Halloween history actually began in the Celtic Druid religion and is a story of witchcraft, death worship, and fear. According to historical documents, October 31st was the day that the druids would worship the Lord of the dead. This was the day that spirits and dead souls would be able to enter into the human world. Knowing more about the historical practices revolving around this day will give Christians a new perspective on the ancient celebration. Halloween is not something that should be celebrated without knowledge of what one is taking part in; for when one honors a festival such as this, he or she is performing a ritual that laughs in the face of life and worships that which is dark and dead. "And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, wherefore think ye evil in your hearts." (Matthew 9:4)

Christians may find the facts associated with the festivities on October 31st very revealing. The history of Halloween reveals darkness as we delve deeper into the Druid religion. Halloween history involves the Druid priests sacrificing animals and humans in order to keep the evil spirits away. People would dress as the dead in an attempt to disguise themselves from any roaming spirit that might inflict harm. And, treats were put in front of doors to bribe the spirits or appease them. Christians have moved their holiday called All Hollows Eve to November 1st in order to put a lesser emphasis on Halloween. However, in the course of participating in the Holiday itself, Christians are celebrating that which is dangerous. "Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good." (Romans 12:21) Check out this Heaven and Hell Quiz to find out your understanding of good and evil.

History also reveals that the Romans conquered the Celtics in AD 43 and changed the celebrating of the dead to an October date. During that time there would also be celebrations honoring the goddess of fruit and trees. The history of Halloween indicates that apples were used during the this festival and this is where apple bobbing is derived from. Nothing of Christ can be remotely associated with any of these pre-Christ celebrations, and according the Word of God, Christians are to stay away from anything that does not honor Him and dishonors His work, which is life.

With the knowledge of the origins of Halloween, Christians are now in the position to determine who they serve and honor. Witchcraft, Satanic worship and rituals, and increasing violence are indicators of where our culture is headed and the day that is set aside to celebrate such things should be boycotted by Christians everywhere. If Christians continue to support Halloween history then no one will be there to fight against that which is evil. "Abstain from all appearance of evil." (1 Thessalonians 5:22)
