Digital Clock Radios

Purchasing digital clock radios offers many choices that were not available just a few short years ago. Whether a consumer is in the market for a product with an alarm feature, a travel alarm, or a stylish digital wall clock, the variety of features and price points that are available require a little research and comparison shopping to find the product that best suits the need of a particular consumer. These timepieces generally offer a contemporary, high tech design element and can give the consumer a wide variety of choices in both extra features and distinctive look. Whether in the market for a small bedside radio and alarm or an oversized display of time for the wall, these products are nothing like the timepieces of days past. That is not to say that anyone with a taste for antiques or collectables can't find a product that suits their style. There are many products available that incorporate both classic style and digital technology. The Bible talks about the importance of timely and consistent obedience to God's Word. "Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors." (Proverbs 8:34)

Today's digital clock radios offer a myriad of choices and features. Even the most basic models present a wide variety of choices including large, easy to read displays, radios that feature both AM and FM receivers, snooze alarms, display dimmer switches, a sleep to music feature and a back up battery power source. Other features could include an earphone jack, radio frequency ranges, and the choice to wake up to either the sound of music or a buzzer. Some of the more elaborate models might also feature a top loading CD player that will also function as an alarm, allowing the user to wake up to the sounds of their favorite CD. Warranties on these products can vary, but are generally around one year. These products are usually small and will fit well on a side table or nightstand. Portable, battery powered models are more suited for travel than stationary use and have changed greatly from the days of large boom boxes or portable transistor radios. Equipped with digital frequency read outs and bright LED displays, these products, like the digital wall clock, feature a wide variety of design features but are small enough to travel well but pack an amazingly large amount of features. The dual alarm feature allows the same clock to be set to sound a wake up alarm at two different times without the necessity of resetting the time between alarms.

For the consumer who wishes to find a product that will make a bold, contemporary statement, the digital wall clock might be a good choice. Some of these clocks are roughly forty inches by twenty inches in size or larger with a bright, bold digital display of the time, making a high tech declaration that can't be missed. Some of these clocks also display the temperature, the humidity, the weather forecast, and even the phases of the moon in addition to the time. Unlike digital clock radios, very few of these products feature an alarm. Design elements can range from sleek metal or sophisticated wood or a tasteful combination of the two. Most sell for less than fifty dollars, but some of the more upscale models can run into the thousands. One of the benefits of these kinds of timepieces is that the displays are very easy to read, even for someone with failing eyesight. Some are similar in appearance to the face of a digital watch, except that these products are obviously created on a much larger scale.

Another interesting product along this line is the atomic alarm clock. These products are also sometimes called radio controlled and offer a unique feature. Known for their accuracy, these space age timepieces receive extremely accurate radio transmissions that set the device according to timing data that has been received from the United States master atomic timepiece. This master device is based on the innate reverberation of the cesium atom, giving these devices their name. Boasting accuracy within a fraction of a second, these devices even set themselves. The only drawback to this product is that it must be in a location that allows it to receive radio signals for it to function properly. The source of these signals is a station in Ft. Collins, Colorado called WWVB. This station belongs to the Untied States Government National Institute of Standards and Technology. Its role is to set the standard for accurate time information and transmit that information to the world. This technology can be used to create a beautiful digital wall clock as well as highly accurate digital clock radios. These products function best when they are not placed near computers or cordless phones since these devices could cause an interference with the signal needed. Buildings that contain a large amount of steel could create interference as well, causing these timepieces to function less efficiently.

Just like a standard pendulum timepiece, digital clock radios as well as the digital wall clock actually operate on a very standard technology. The difference is that digital products handle operation functions electronically while old fashioned pendulum timepieces are mechanical devices and function accordingly. In the modern models, an electronic time base keeps time while a counter signals the display element to show the correct time. Displays could be LED displays, also known as light emitting diodes, or LCD displays, also known as liquid crystal displays.
