Remote Desktop Management

As telecommuting grows in popularity, remote computer management becomes crucial to a corporation's organization and daily administration. Gone are the days when an information technology specialist visits each office to individually install software on processors one by one. With a global economy and transitory workplace, it is impossible and impractical for the computer technician to synchronize all the processors one at a time. With large corporations representing hundreds of desktop computers, not to mention a score of laptops, the information technology employee or team is better served by utilizing remote desktop management. In this scenario, an individual network processor can make alterations, perform software downloads, change hardware functioning or connections or even monitor all the processors or hand-held devices linked into the network simultaneously.

In a large company this time saving capability has vastly increased productivity and allowed corporations to fine tune software updates across many platforms and standardize the processors of many employees without them even having to be at work at the time. This also allows information technology professionals to focus on software research, trouble-shooting areas of information weakness and enhancing network function within the office. Before, much of an information professional's time was taken up by walking from desk to desk, manually downloading software or standardizing processors to the network protocol. These kinds of tasks could have taken days, even weeks in a large company. Now, with the introduction and enhancement of remote computing, the IT professional working on the network processor can make these changes within minutes, and even set the main network port to complete these tasks after the office is closed and the employees have all gone home. Not to mention, remote computer management greatly assists businesses that have a global presence. It simply is impractical, maybe even impossible, to standardize processors that span the globe. An information technology professional working in Dallas, TX can download software updates onto employees' processors in India, China, England and Canada all within a few minutes. This guarantees that all the offices are up to date, compatible and running with comparable efficiency.

Though the capabilities granted by remote desktop management are about as numerous as the web surfers themselves, there are a few common utilities found most useful by information technology professionals. Among these most useful functions is the ability to access a desktop from a remote location, such as the capability to utilize software from an off-site office, like a home office or internet caf. What a dreaded chore to take time away from useful work to simply turn off the processor of a negligent employee! With remote computer management, an information technology employee can now turn off another employee's processor without leaving his own office. What a time saver! Modifying an employee's settings or software from a network processor also saves time and increase productivity. Through the use of remote desktop management, the information professional can download or upgrade employee's software and alter their settings from the network port. A fourth benefit often utilitized by network supervisors is the ability to see what the computer user is looking at on their own monitor. The technology professional can use remote computer management to view everything an employee is looking at in a work day. Internet usage and off-work emails can be analyzed and minimized by monitoring. Also, when calling for help, if the help desk can view what the caller is seeing, they are more able to help the caller trouble shoot and solve the issues that necessitated the help call in the first place.

The implementation of this network capability always depends on software. There are both windows based and non-windows based options for the network administrator. The software available to cover hand-held devices does not include some of the finer, more specific capabilities available to processor based information systems. However, a hand-held device can still be synchronized and altered from a network that is far away. It is simply not relevant to have the same options of remote computer management for mobile computing devices. Rarely is a user of a hand held device creating spread sheets or composing complicated presentations involving large graphics and stylized transitions. The absence of some of the technology intensive capabilities when interacting with a mobile computing device while away from the office poses no threat of the productivity the employee "stationed" at the hand held device.

There are at least three very important characteristics for any remote desktop management software to possess. Not in every case, but in many scenarios, audio transfer is a valuable option for any networking software. This attribute of some software allows the remote user to hear an audio file saved on the network or originating from the network processors office. This is crucial in industries where audio and visual files are used for information sharing and presentations. The second extremely important characteristic to look for when purchasing this type of software is the ability to encrypt. Encryption allows the software to update itself on all processors simultaneously and across great geographic distances. The ability to transfer files is crucial when many of today's workforce does business out of the office or even from their homes. Finding a network software that allows file sharing from the remote processor to the office and back the other way is imperative to allow employees to still be productive while away from the office. Even ancient shepherds were supposed to keep track of their sheep no matter how distant they were. "Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds." (Proverbs 27:23)
