VoIP requirements list-VoIP’s disadvantages and their solutions

VoIP or voice over internet protocol has become very significant piece of technology in the recent past. Several businesses started using VoIP for their day-to day communications and as a result have made a huge amount of savings in their telephonw bills.

One reason why VoIP users have grown so much is because it provides certain features which were not available in the traditional phones.

There have been a bit of concern, however, about the quality of signal transmitted using VoIP. Users would go through a short drop-out of voice transfer whenever IP packets are slow or lost somewhere while moving through the VoIP network. This is more obvious when the calls are to long distances or when it is a busy time. However, this is no longer the problem as several VoIP service providers have sought for solutions for these problems and have even come up with solutions that make VoIP even better than landline.

Another concern about faxes was also raised in the past. It is said that sending faxes were difficult because of VoIP software restrictions and networking constrains. The T.38 protocol has been developed in order to get around this drawback.

The three main reasons why VoIP is not yet THE only means of communication are:
•Mobile VoIP phone service is not yet fully developed and commercially available
•Power outages
•Emergency services

The first thing that VoIP service providers have to focus on is making VoIP cellular phone and network available commercially. Currently this service is available only on Wi-Fi hotspots. However, since Wi-Fi hotspots are not as good has the current microwave systems of cell phones in terms of its reach, it is not about to replace the present microwave systems as it is not practical on a large scale.

A possible solution to this problem is manufacturing advanced cell phones which can have dual network phones. When the user is not in Wi-Fi hotspots the cell phone operates normally, but when the user is in Wi-Fi hotspots the cell phone switches to VoIP network. This will save the user a lot of money. There are at present a few manufacturers who have released such cell phones.

Another drawback is the absence of emergency services. But this is not a big problem as this can be provided without having to develop complicated technologies. Also, since many governments have made it mandatory to have emergency services with every communication technology, it is most likely that emergency services will be available to all users regardless of whether the user specifically asks for it or not.

Another drawback of the VoIP technology is the power outages. Since, the VoIP technology relies on broadband internet, which in turn requires power, in case of power outages VoIP technology cannot be used. This is a huge disadvantage when compared to traditional landline which continues to work even after power outages. This is especially a concern in developing countries where there are very frequent power outages. The only solution for this is to have a backup in the form of battery or something that stores power which can be used in case of power outages.
