Fire Safety Training

Standard procedure for elementary students is fire safety training several times during their first six years of school. Eager children are then spotted running in from the school bus and ready to attack every safety violation in the house, demanding instant and permanent solutions to hazards they were informed about in the classroom. It can be eye-opening to adults to see issues that they didn't know were problems plus the things they knew were problems but just chose to ignore over the years. The importance a child can feel by making a contribution of this magnitude at home can be a great side benefit to the overall goal of achieving fire safety training in general.

This educational opportunity, done by fire experts across the country for businesses, schools, civic clubs and other organizations can cover many topics. Children will learn at school about the importance of having an established rescue route planned for every room in the house. Parents will have to accompany children into every room and point out which way family members should go if a material combustion should break out and plan a second way out if the door is blocked. Children can use mazes that can be downloaded from fire safety computer based training sites to get practice in finding different ways to get out of tricky situations. Home security training received at school will send the children running home to find frayed electrical appliance cords, dryers left on without anyone around to monitor them, fireplaces without screens and dozens of other violations. And of course, it goes without saying that they will remind parents of changing smoke detector batteries on a regular basis, and of having several working extinguishers, each rated for particular types of blazes.

Anti-fire education for adults will include a number of issues not covered in the children's instruction. For instance, insistence on a no smoking in bed policy, electric blanket purchases, cooking safety, fireworks safety, safe campfire instruction, security for high rise apartments and older citizen protection issues can all be a part of fire security educationfor adults. Additionally, holiday outdoor and indoor lighting safety, fireplace integrity, motel and hotel escape plans and manufactured home fire security are part of an anti-fire program aimed at adult. Information for these and many other issues can be covered in fire safety computer based training. This type of informational training is easily accessible at many government websites.

Professional firefighters need a combination of both hands-on instruction on a regular basis and informational updates. Combustion safety training for these men and women will include some real life practice at fighting blazes in all types of buildings and scenarios, but will also include combustion safety computer based training to increase proper reactions and correct decision making instincts. Virtual blazes in houses, high rise apartments, inner city factories, schools and other developing situations can be programmed to provide fire safety training to both the layperson and fire experts. For the experts, a number of variables can be thrown into the virtual setting such as new fires in other parts of the building, trapped civilians, horrific weather conditions, unexpected explosions, and even communications failures. All this to heighten the decision making pressure, all to prepare even the seasoned inferno fighter for an increased level of assessment making prowess.

Of course, this training is not limited to those who use buildings or fight blazes in urban or suburban settings and not just to those professional blaze fighters, but also the many volunteer fire fighters who awake from three in the morning to leave families to go and fire fight also. It can also be applied to teach those who use the country's natural resources as campers, bikers and hikers and those who are called in to protect those users and those resources from blaze dangers and destruction at the possibility of life loss to them. The French have developed fire safety computer based training for the pilots who haul in chemical and water drops to remote areas. This virtual training engages all the senses with weather anomalies, changes in wind direction, geographic terrain differences and other variables. Websites that direct wildlife blaze fighters to blogs for daily discussions of areas of concern not to be forgotten or ignored are available as a constant for these brave men and women. Areas of discussion each day include times when all communications are down and one is alone fighting a fire, planning escape routes, the responsibilities and attributes of a good lookout, and the use of safety zones. In addition, discussions and training regarding the ability to read weather signs and behavior are also included in many fire safety computer based training.

"Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even as a vapour, that appeareth for a little time and then vanisheth away." (James 4:14) A drive down a certain rural, winding, narrow and mountainous road in an eastern state will take one into a deep valley and then up a rise to a tiny village at the top of the hill where thirteen family members were once killed in a house inferno. A drive past that now empty and barren lot at the crest of the hill evokes many questions, not the least being, "Were there smoke detectors?" and, "Did the children coming bounding off the bus one day, eager to share with the parents the things they had learned in the fire safety training they had received at school?" And one final lingering questions remains: "Did the parents listen?"
