Music Industry Degree Programs

A music industry degree program is a course of study within a college or university directed toward the specific goal of preparing students to work in this market. While more traditional degrees offer preparation for teaching or performing, music industry degree programs offer coursework that provides ample preparation for those that love this subject and want a career in the business end of the discipline. Some of the program options for those interested are the business, recording technology, or a program that is a combination of the two. The usual degree that is offered is a Bachelor of Music or a Bachelor of Science.

This training will combine musically-based business courses with regular business administration courses. The industry is unique, and some of the practices employed in the field are unique as well. Some of the careers available to music industry degree program business graduates are musical instrument sales, instrument manufacturing, publishing and printing, instrument repair, and recording including electronics. For students of music industry degree programs interested in the recording technology aspect, the career path could include recording engineer, audio-video post-production engineer, record production, editing, and studio management.

An education in this field should continue to expand as a discipline given the propensity of Americans to purchase pre-recorded CD's and videos. The evolution of videos has also vastly added to the opportunities for turning a profit through these venues and has made the ability to study with a music industry degree program more prolific. The entertainment market is a multi-billion dollar one and just keeps growing. With one of every five Americans playing a musical instrument, it stands to reason that musical rhythms, lyrics, and songs are important to the national culture. Many of the music industry degree programs place students in internships in the major markets of New York, Los Angeles, or Nashville as well as regional markets like Chicago and Detroit to hone their craft.

Studying through these courses will offer students the opportunity to "Praise (the Lord) with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs," as Psalm 150:4 suggests. Business opportunities are limitless for the graduate of a music industry degree program. This can also provide students with educational experiences such as the NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) trades shows held twice a year with free admission for students. Along with the chance to work for well-known record labels, radio stations, manufacturers, agents, and concert venues, music industry degree programs are an excellent way to prepare for a future in this industry.
