Stewardship Programs

Stewardship is important to just about every area of life, and the help needed to encourage individuals and organizations to do their part in this important area is abundant. This type of service begins in the home, with taking care of the family's environment. Recycling to reduce landfill items is seriously promoted in most American communities, and families find that the easiest part of their responsibilities. In addition, being careful with chemicals that are introduced into the ground or on plants requires an attention. Preservation of animal habitats is a responsibility that humans must take seriously if the balance in nature is to be maintained. Many families are practicing by maintaining plants in their yards that encourage the presence of wildlife. Bird feeders are an easy example of good service, or growing flowers that attract hummingbirds or butterflies. Growing trees and plants that provide nesting places are another means of showing a dedication to stewardship of the land.

Stewardship programs come into play when new construction or new expensive appointments (such as a new organ) are needed. If a parish has decreased in size, stewardship can become a major issue for a congregation, and a resolution may include a program to reach out for new members. On the other side of that coin, a growing congregation may need a new sanctuary, which will require a major emphasis. When that happens, there are professional organizations that can be called upon to introduce stewardship programs that will help the congregation meet its goal.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has a well-established policy for Federal highway projects, that operate on the premise that quality construction results in fewer repairs that result in disruption of traffic and environmental impacts. This type of generosity results in improved efficiency, and oversight of materials, equipment and construction practices are designed to maintain the highest quality. There are forest programs nationwide to help small forest owners to manage properties through conservation and generally implementing good forestry practices. There are environmental stewardship programs that concentrate on specific areas, meeting the needs of that area by helping control plant diseases and pests, and restoration of damaged areas. God wants His people to have the best of everything only when He grants the resources. It is wise to evaluate the needs and real resources available to offer help in the desired areas. Christian churches foster these values to meet goals. There are stewardship programs available to pastors and church leaders to guide them in ways to increase members' awareness of the congregation responsibilities to increase their giving. Sometimes normal costs of upkeep generate increased stewardship awareness, and sometimes there is a special need.
