A free credit report can be obtained on the Internet or with a phone call and is a great way to find out where a person stands when it comes to their management of finances and their reliability for repaying loans. While getting a record at no charge is possible for anybody, everyone will be limited as to the number of reports they can get per year. A financial rating, however, is a different situation. Because the major United States credit bureaus do not give a totally free credit score to consumers, each person will need to find another agency online from which to get one.
One's financial record can be a useful tool in helping them determine how good or poor their financial record is and why. A free credit report is available through any of the three major bureaus - Trans Union, Equifax and Experian - once every 12 months. If the consumer is denied lending, they can receive another free credit report within 60 days of the date they were denied a loan or lending account. The consumer will need to collect a record from each bureau, as the three bureaus do not share financial and customer information. However, the bureaus will not make this process easy.
Unfortunately, the reality of receiving a rating at no charge from the bureaus is that it's impossible. That being said, the bureaus only charge a minimal fee. However, if the consumer is interested in getting a totally free credit score, in addition to a free credit report, there are sites online that can help a consumer get a rating at no charge based on their financial situation. The ratings that these sites will offer will not be the same as the ones offered by the primary credit rating company, Fair, Isaac Company (FICO). For example, while FICO measures ratings based on numbers from 300-850, other sites offering a totally free credit score, may measure a rating from 0-100. Therefore, the consumer may have difficulty making sense of the rating when comparing it to the record.
While a rating at no charge is not official and cannot be used to obtain lending, the number, along with a copy of one's record, can help gauge the financial situation. Even if the consumer scores low or high on an unofficial totally free credit score or record, at least can see how they are doing. "Lo this, we have searched it, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thy good" (Job 5:27).
