Personal credit counseling can be obtained in a variety of ways including one-on-one counseling of finances, attendance of seminars, or credit counseling classes that aim at educating in the area of financial management. Such services can be offered by a non-profit organization, a church, or a private business. Those that are seeking a reputable company should check their local BBB or Better Business Bureau chapter, and locate the personal credit counseling companies with the highest ratings.
The Better Business Bureau rates businesses based on previous customer reviews and complaints. It also lists how quickly the complaints were resolved, if at all. The Better Business Bureau offers free access to the public and their ratings of credit counseling companies can be viewed online for the convenience of users. Any company that is giving financial advice (especially concerning the score) should be rated "AAA". Those that have found an "AAA" rated personal credit counseling service should ask for the contact information of previous customers in the area.
By speaking one-on-one with a previous customer, a potential client can get a feel for the style and method used by a particular personal finances organization. A good personal credit counseling agency will honestly inform their clients that there is no way to fix a report, except to pay the bills and get a note from the satisfied creditor. Some may say that waiting for the statute to expire will clear away bad debt, but as companies sell that debt to others, the statute will never expire, because a new statute starts with the new account. A credit counseling company cannot reestablish credit but can offer help in re-building poor scores by giving advice to a client on the appropriate steps to take to pay off their debt, and reestablish the credit themselves.
Christians are responsible for the financial stewardship God has given them and should seek help or credit counseling if they need it. They will one day give an account of how they lived their life in this world, based on the decisions and choices they made, and the reactions they showed to adversity and in fruitful times. . "For it is written, as I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God, so then every one of us shall give account of himself to God." (Romans 14:11-12) Debt can be a hindrance in living a happy life and seeking help will give debtors a new beginning.
