Free Consumer Credit Counseling

Free consumer credit counseling offers consumers insight into paying off debt, eliminating the need for credit cards, and creating a good financial rating. There are numerous companies and organizations that offer this type of assistance and can often be found through commercials or advertisements on television, radio, and the Internet. Finding the right organization for the individual may depend on a variety of aspects. Some churches, Christian organizations, community centers, and schools in the local area may provide a consumer with help in seeking financial freedom.

The first step an individual should take is to call or go online to find out more about the company. This is a good time to find out where their funding comes from, who monitors the company, and what their qualifications are. This information can be discovered by checking with the Better Business Bureau to see if the company has had any complaints in the past. Also, it is important find out if there is some sort of a written contract with the company. The more informed a person is about free consumer credit counseling, the more they will be able to understand the process of becoming debt free. The consumer also needs to understand exactly how these services can be beneficial in their personal situation.

Financial counselors provide confidential financial management counseling, sources of educational aid and support, and debt management help. Currently there are no federal regulations for free consumer credit counseling, making it necessary for the consumer to be well aware of the organization they are working with. Millions of people are currently living beyond their means, and that is where these services come into play. In lieu of filing bankruptcy, which has now become even more difficult to do, credit advisors can help a person rebuild their credit and get back on track. Knowing that there is hope makes things easier. "Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost." (Romans 15:13).

This type of service or program can sometimes encourage creditors to lower interest and finance charges, or terminate them altogether. Although free consumer credit counseling services are free, some do charge a small fee. Usually repayment plans, set up by these services can only cover unsecured debts. If the consumer has secured debts, they will have to work with creditors and continue to make payments directly to the lender, without the help of a counselor. Most companies will offer multiple plans to choose from.
