Family Credit Counseling Services

Family credit counseling services offer help to people who are in debt and beginning to see their financial report and score suffer as a result. Now more than ever, Americans are overspending and borrowing more than they can afford to borrow. Soon, they owe so much money that a person has to pick and choose what debts to pay each month while neglecting others. A family credit counseling service can be a solution to this problem. These resources benefit families by getting them on a debt management plan. In the end, families can save hundreds of dollars in interest and repair their credit report.

These establishments are non-profit organizations, sometimes faith-based, that offer financial assistance for a small, monthly fee. The fee typically goes towards the cost of managing consumers' accounts. When choosing a family credit counseling service, be sure that they only offer FDIC insured accounts. They also need to be known and reputable, whether they are Christian or not. Ask around to find out about family credit counseling services that friends know and trust.

Once a service has been selected, these companies will want to know everything about the current debts. They will examine the individual financial situation to determine how to compile all of the debts into one easy, monthly payment. These organizations simply call creditors and inform them that their client is on a debt management plan. The family credit counseling service speaks to them on the client's behalf and can usually negotiate with them to erase late charges and other fees.

This route doesn't solve a debt problem by creating another debt problem. Many credit counselors and consolidators will simply provide a consolidation loan. The last thing a family in debt needs is another loan. With family credit counseling services, they can pay off debts and learn how to manage money properly. "The Lord will give strength unto his people; the Lord will bless his people with peace." (Psalm 29:11)

When making the first monthly payment, a person will give it to the debt organization, then deposit it into a federally insured account and the funds are dispersed to the creditors. After two to three months, most creditors will stop calling to harass about debts because there will be a consistency in payments. Gradually, the credit score will reflect the consistent payments as well. As each account is paid off, the client is encouraged by family credit counseling services to continue to pay the same amount. Extra funds from a paid-off account will go towards the next highest interest account.
