Fishing is not the hardest thing to undertake, but there are some critical components to it that you have to know. Perhaps the most important is bait. In this article, we take a look at lesser known bass and trout bait.
You will read over and over that a certain type of bait should always be used for a particular fish. Is this accurate? Yes and no. A better guideline is to always ask locals in the area what bait is best.
Bass and trout are undoubtedly the two most common fish anglers go after. Just about everything is known about these fish including their eating habits. Still, some information about their favorite bait has slipped through the cracks.
Our first bait is a little blood sucker. Literally. We are talking leeches. Put a leech on your line and the fish will form a traffic jam coming after them. Both bass and trout love leeches, so they are a good bait in just about any situation.
I love lobster, you love lobster, we all love lobster. Well, smallmouth bass love them to. Obviously, they cannot eat an entire lobster, so go down a size and use crayfish as bait. The imitation lures are so good you can use them and eat the crayfish yourself.
The frog is a much maligned animal. Yes, it spread disease and eats crops, but it also serves as a major bait for bass. When your frog bait sits on the surface of the water in your fishing hole, it is like placing a red target in front of a bull.
Mice are a delicacy for big bass. Get an imitation lure and create lots of vibrations. A mouse in water is panicking and flailing around. Make your lure do the same and a big fish might be on your line in the near future.
So, should you go with the authentic version of the above bait or imitation lures and flies? Imitation is going to work in every case, but there is no beating the original. The choice is yours.
As you can imagine, these baits are hit and miss. Your best option is to use them as an addition to your normal bait. That way, you can avoid being skunked if they do not work out.
