Water Rowing Machine : For A Serious Workout

By Ray Lam

Water resistance rowing machines are designed to simulate real rowing, and they do this quite accurately. They are usually the most expensive, largest and heaviest models. The water tank that creates the resistance is in the front of the machine in all the models, and is designed to simulate actual rowing conditions and sounds. The resistance changes as the stroke rate increases. Water resistance models are not as loud as air machines, but they are louder than magnetic and piston models.

Water resistance models are generally quite expensive. The cheapest models usually start at $700 and the most expensive can be $3,000. The cheapest models are good machines; they usually have interactive monitors and are designed to be comfortable and ergonomic. The more expensive models have more interactive monitor features, and are designed for better performance.

Rowing machines imitate the action of rowing a boat. Have you ever seen a sculling race that is very popular with the collages in England? As you watch you will see the rowers sliding back and forth in there chairs as they row with the oars. This back and forth movement with the lower body along with the rowing action of the upper body provides a total body workout. This is has been long acknowledged as one of the best types of exercise available.

The Air or Flywheel Rowing Machines gives you a very real feel similar to rowing on the water. They have an easy resistance design, as they grow in resistance by how much you put into them. The harder you work the faster the wheel moves. The Air or Flywheel Rowing Machines gives you a more natural and smoother workout.

You are getting the aerobic workout when you go faster and are getting resistance training for all your muscle groups as well. The back of your legs from your feet to your lower back is getting resistance training. But with a water rowing machine you are also stretching your entire body as well. Physical therapists use these machines quite frequently as the patient is working all their joints and tendons without putting addition stress on them. Some who use a water rowing machine report feeling stretched and even relaxed after a workout.
