Singers Must Learn Correct Posture

What is excellent posture and why is it important for a singer? First of all your voice comes from you and your body, which becomes the instrument. When you sing you have to be aware of your breathing, your posture, and how you present yourself to your audience by maintaining some eye contact.

Posture is basic to the development of a singer's skills. It is vital to have a relaxed upper body with the feet planted firmly on the ground. Make sure the knees are not stiff, but relaxed with one foot slightly forward. A singer should always be thinking about whether the posture is correct with muscles relaxed, and spine lengthened while standing.

Voice instructors habitually tell their students to hold their spine upright so that it feels lengthened. They should inhale deeply and exhale slowly, so that their muscles relax as they do this. While breathing, the chin should be held under so that there is more room for airflow.

If the student does not practice correct posture, the upper body will be stressed and tight and it may spread to the back. In the meantime, the vocal cords will become tight and unable to help you reach a full voice while you sing. If this happens, you may lose some confidence in your ability to sing, so you need to constantly practice good posture.

If you are going to sing in public, make sure you think of your spine as you prepare to sing. It's important that your diaphragm is working in conjunction with your lengthened spine as you begin singing. Excellent posture with meaningful eye contact present an aura of confidence and willingness to communicate with the audience.

How should you stand while you perform in front of an audience? Try to stand with each foot firmly on the floor. Make sure each knee is not straightened as this can create problems with balance and can even disrupt air flow. Your feet will help ground you and work with your good posture as you perform.

A singer who holds themselves with the proper posture looks very self-confident and secure as a performer. Your goal as a singer is to look directly in the audience and communicate your music. So always be aware of the knees because they support your body, and observe yourself in the mirror so you can see how they look and learn how to bend them slightly so it becomes routine.

Realize that when you sing, your voice is an expression of your body. Your body helps your voice if it is relaxed with no muscular tension and uninterrupted air flow while you breathe. So keep in mind that proper breathing and the way you hold your shoulders and spine operate in conjunction to help you become a good singer.
