Weight Loss: How Long Does It Take

By Emily Schwartz

One question raised in relation to weight loss is how long it will take to achieve. There are some information that you will need to collect in relation to your body's composition which can help to determine just how long it is going to take you to lose weight.

First, you need to determine just how much of your body is fat and how much of it is mass (muscle and bone). There are certain measurements one can take that will help to calculate out what percentage of your body weight is mass and what is fat.

For men, the measurements that they need to take are their body weight and their waist. For women, they don't only need to weigh themselves, they also need to measure the circumference of their waist, hips, wrist and forearm. Then they need to carry out some calculations and this will help them to work out what percentage of their body is made up of fat.

There are numerous sites online that explain the way to calculate the percentage of fat or else you can use sites where you just input the measurements taken and they will then calculate this figure for you. As soon as you know your body's fat percentage, you can work out how long it will take you to burn that off.

The first thing you need to do is work out how much weight you want to lose and deduct this from what you weigh currently. Therefore if you say weigh 220 lbs and want to weight 203 lbs in the future, the amount of weight you are looking to lose is 17 lbs.

To calculate how long it is going to take you to lose the weight you need to divide the weight loss goal by how much you intend to lose each week. Therefore if your aim is to lose 1 lb each week, expect it to take you 17 weeks to lose those 17 lbs. Also you need to factor into the calculation that you are trying to burn off fat rather than muscle.

The diet and exercise regime you use should be one that will help to ensure that fat is burnt off and muscle mass gained. Keeping your weight loss goals to around 1 lb a week will ensure that you do so safely instead of resorting to starvation kinds of diets to achieve your weight loss goals.

The problem when it comes to weight loss and how long it takes to achieve the desired goals will also depend upon a person's determination and will power to stick with the new dietary and exercise regime. Many people also tend to give up if they don't see any physical changes in the first couple of weeks.
