1. Stay positive - remind yourself the objective is to look just fitter and trimmer. Take it slowly and make small goals to help you resolve if you fall off track. One unhealthy meal won't kill you, but a lifetime of them will.

2. Try to eat fish twice a week, especially fatty fish with plenty of omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, trout or blue eye.

3. Once you've decided to become more physically active, be sure to consult your local doctor before beginning any exercise routine. Always, wear comfortable exercise shoes and clothing, workout within your fitness levels and, if you feel pain or discomfort, speak to your doctor.

4. Give in to temptation - from time to time. You don't have to be strict and deprive yourself of the treats you enjoy. But this doesn't mean you have to scoff down the whole thing - otherwise you'll gain more weight. If you do have that taste bud drooling over a piece of cake, you deserve one, that's all. Having a treat once in a while keeps you from losing the motivation.

5. Time your carbs - you need a routine that locks in when you eat carbs. Timing is crucial to avoid stockpiling fat and promote fast, effective fat loss. Eat the majority of your carbs (rice, pasta, potatoes, bread) before 1 pm or directly before a workout, because you are more likely to burn these off.
