Advanced Degrees in Nursing

Advanced degrees in nursing are becoming a popular choice for RN's who want to improve their clinical skills, qualify for any number of management positions and receive a higher paycheck. With the growing nurses shortage in the United States, RN's are capitalizing on the opportunity to receive promotional training offered by many colleges and universities. These are considered to be any nursing degree above an RN. This includes a BSN or Bachelor of Nursing Degree, an MSN or Masters of Science in Nursing, and an NP or Nurse Practitioner. Advanced nursing degrees allow a nurse to eliminate their floor time, which can be a very rigorous job duty.

The BSN can be obtained at an accelerated pace once an RN designation is met. There are many schools that offer these advanced degrees in nursing online. Many employers of RN's will offer tuition reimbursement for obtaining this degree if a contract to work for a set number of years is signed by the RN. A BSN will enable a nurse to qualify for a variety of management positions within a hospital or organization. Along with these particular diplomas come higher pay rates. Since there is such a shortage of nurses, many Bachelors degree graduates in other subject areas are going back to school and taking the required courses, passing the NCLEX, and receiving a second Bachelor's degree in nursing. These who discover nursing as an answer to an unfulfilling career can discover new life in a career that takes their first degree even farther. "Thou art wearied in the greatness of thy way; yet saidest thou not, There is no hope: thou hast found the life of thine hand; therefore thou wast not grieved" (Isaiah 57:10).

The MSN is for those who have already received a BSN and are looking to gain a much higher level position. These particular advanced degrees in nursing allow the nurse to specialize in one or more particular areas. MSN graduates can perform a variety of duties including but not limited to research, education, instruction, and directing. Obtaining an MSN can be done online as well. Many hospitals, employers or state governments will sponsor and reimburse a nurse for continuing their education. These reimbursements also come with an employment contract

The NP is one of the most advanced degrees that one can hold. It requires a highly advanced level of clinical experience. Nurses attain this level of academic achievement in order to diagnose and manage common and chronic illnesses independently or under the supervision of a doctor. In most states the NP's have the ability to prescribe medication. This is a much higher level of the field, and currently pays the highest salary next to tenure in an organization. Whether or not a nurse wants to advance to a BSN, MSN or NP is dependent upon specific personal career goals. Advanced degrees in nursing are offered through many flexible methods and obtaining these degrees today is a much needed and supported choice.
