Beginning Fishing

By Bryan Jakes

Fishing is a lot of fun. You can have an enjoyable time with a bamboo pole, a piece of string and a worm on a hook. But to do it right, you need some basic supplies.

You can purchase the necessary items to catch fish for less than $50. Another choice is to rent your equipment and see if you even like fishing. This is a cheaper way to go if you're not sure and you won't be out much money.

One of the first things you need to purchase is a fishing license. Most states require you to have a license if you are over 16 to fish in public places such as lakes, streams, and rivers. If your child is under 16 they don't normally need a fishing license.

The fees vary from state to state and are used for upkeep to a lot of the recreational areas, and help pay for stocking fish. Every now and again, states will set a day aside so you can go fishing for free and see whether you really enjoy the fishing experience are not without having to pay for a full year's fishing license.

Game wardens regularly check for fishing licenses. The citation can be expensive, and if they choose, they can confiscate all of your fishing tackle if you don't have one. Make sure you purchase a license for fishing in the required areas and keep it visible at all times.

The type of fishing gear, you use will depend on what type of fish you are trying to catch. No matter how basic you start it is best to use the type that is the most effective.

Make a list and then work off of that. On your list, write down a rod and reel, hooks, fishing line, weights, bait, and a tackle box. Set your budget and stick to it. It's easy to spend way more than you need, but spend enough to buy a decent quality fishing gear.

Going back to the option of renting might be another thought you could entertain. A lot of small bait and tackle shops rent fishing equipment. By renting you can decide if you like the sport, before laying out a lot of cash. Most tackle shops have someone there that has experience and can help you to purchase the best fishing equipment for the type of fish you are going to fish for.

Another advantage of renting your gear is you can get some tips on how to use it from most tackle shops. They can help you get set up for the type of fish your going to try to catch.

A rod and reel combo is probably the best way to get started. Many companies package these for beginners. There are several companies that make high-quality fishing gear for all spending budgets. Daiwa, Okuma, Shakespeare, and Shimano are companies that make some of the most popular fishing equipment.
