By Thulas Sukati

Cuban cigars are the most famous in the world for their smooth, rich flavors. They are so famous that illegitimate cigar dealers are always catching out enthusiastic but unknowing cigar smokers, with fakes. To ensure you are not caught out like this, make certain that you purchase your cigars from a legitimate dealer. There are legitimate sources out there to buy from such as mail order cigar suppliers or your local tobacconist.

No doubt you would jump at the chance of buying some Cuban cigars but it would be a very good idea for you to thoroughly check them first. To help you recognize the real cigars, there are a few things you need to know. There are a number of marks on the cigar box to look for including a white and green guarantee seal situated on the front left side of the box as well as a seal that has an insignia with a picture of a hat and shield. A white sticker with the word 'Habanos' fixed across the upper right hand corner, should also be visible if it is the real thing.

Also watch out for a box that has any type of damage, printing smudges or if the box looks dull because it should be neat, clean and free from any marks. There is also the word 'Habanos' heat stamped into the bottom of the box. Some fake boxes of Cuban cigars have this but printed labels or a rubber stamp have been used. You should also find a factory code stamp at the bottom that is stamped in green, blue or black ink and this stamp will tell you when and where the cigars were rolled.

Despite all those checks, it is still possible the cigars may be damaged. Dedicated cigar smokers will recognize the deep rich aroma which an unmistakable sign of a Cuban cigar. A weak or an indistinct aroma is a sure sign that it is not a box of Cuban cigars. The cigars should be facing the same way, and the top row may appear slightly flattened.

Each cigar should have a foot that has been cleanly cut plus the bands and caps of each cigar should be the same. If it is possible, try to feel the cigars as they should be firm and pliable without any hard or soft areas. There are many factors to distinguish a real Cuban cigar but if you are a dedicated cigar lover, the last thing you would want is a fake box.
