Debt Consolidation Companies - Find the Right Company For You

By Nita Breck

If you type "debt consolidation" into the search box for any search engine, you will be greeted with pages of debt consolidation companies offering to fix your debt problems for you. Don't assume a company is reputable because it pays for an ad or shows up on the first page.

Before you give out personal information or agree to any terms, you should always investigate the company. This is especially true when it comes to debt consolidation. Unfortunately, there are companies out there who will take advantage of your situation. One debt consolidation company is not the same as another.

To find out if a debt consolidation company is reputable, you need to do some research. Type the name of the company into the search box and look for their name listed in forums for disgruntled clients. Visit the site for the Better Business Bureau and search for the company there. If the company you are considering does not appear there, that doesn't mean it is reputable - especially if it is new. If it does appear on the Better Business Bureau's site, read the content carefully. It could be a solid company or it could be a rip-off.

A reputable company won't give you higher interest rates than the ones you have already been paying and their fees won't be outrageous. If you are asked for a good deal of money up front, don't trust them. Good debt consolidation services will be able to talk to your creditors and make a dent in your debt. They should also be able to give you credit counseling. If a company is legitimate, they will not have any problems answering any questions you may have.

The best debt consolidation companies are those that are non-profit. Be advised that "non-profit" does not mean "no pay". They are considered non-profit because they do not charge over and above that which will pay their expenses. They are not charities. Another warning: Some companies claim to be non-profit when that is far from the truth. Employ the same strategies with non-profits as you would for any other debt consolidation company.

The NFCC or National Foundation for Credit Counseling is an accreditation foundation for debt consolidation services. Their practices are considered helpful and legal. Check out their site to find accredited reputable consolidation companies near you.
