A dns hosting service was needed for the guy just starting his voice over business. Dreams of doing national voice over commercial work and even film trailers danced through the man's head almost without pause. The term dns is the abbreviation of domain name server and is the service that changes a human recognizable website address into one that a computer can understand, or in other words, it's the Internet phonebook. The voice over guy needed a company to host the man's website and allow its services to be translated in computer language in order that searchers for voice over talents could find the guy's particular web address. In other words, if a person asked a computer to find bestnewyorkhamburgers without using a dns hosting service, the computer would just turn to the searcher and say, "Huh?" A computer does not understand the human language addresses or searches we type into our computers, instead the machine needs binary code, or the Internet protocol (IP) for finding a certain website.
When the voice over guy began planning the company web site, the first decision that needed to be made was a domain name. The domain name would need to include something that had to do with voiceovers and could be remembered rather easily. Since a number of people were already in the vo business and certain variations were already taken, plus the fact that the man's own name was already a dot com with someone else, the guy went with the domain name, thevoiceovershop.com. Believing that this phrase could have an excellent marketing appeal, the name was a no brainer for the guy with the golden voice. "The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is long suffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." (2 Peter 3:9)
Most domain registerers offer hosting service when they register a domain name. And dns server hosting is not expensive. Most companies charge between two and six dollars a month for a domain hosting service. Public dns server hosting services are actually free, and can be found by simply searching for free dns servers. These free sites may not offer all of the options that private companies do, but the website can be up and running fairly quickly.
While dns hosting service sounds fairly tame, think about what that means every day. There are billions of IP addresses in use now, and the number is growing each twenty four hours. Billions of dns requests happen every day and a single person can make several hundred requests each, multiplied by hundreds of millions of people. People change domain names and IP addresses every day and there are millions of people across the world keeping all of these changes current. There are a lot of IT people who complain about the gigantic amount of data for which they are responsible, but consider the amount of data that goes around the world each day thanks to dns server hosting!
When the dns hosting service receives a request for an IP, there are actually four things that can happen. If it knows the IP address it can send the address immediately. If it doesn't know the IP address, it can contact another host server and see if that host knows the IP, and it should be noted that request could occur many time. Thirdly, it can send the request to another hosting supplier. Finally, the host can send an error message saying the IP cannot be found.
As the guy with the golden voice mulled over which dns host to hire, there was a question about what kind of services are offered by different host servers. Since he had a personal email account, he wanted one with the company name, and a number of dns servers offered email accounts as part of their service, some up to a three thousand addresses, depending on which service was chosen. IN addition, servers offer things like webmail, greeting cards, email forwarding, auto=responder, spam and virus protection, email privacy, SQL capabilities, access without entering "www," site statistics and firewall protection. As the golden voiced man learned more about dns server hosting, the decision was made to add four more domain names that would forward hits to thevoiceovership.com. These domain names could possible provide more possibilities for business and the dns server hosting would only charge two dollars for every extra domain name added to the account. In the end, the vo guy would spend about a hundred and fifty dollars a year for the host services.
This particular blog is really about names and their importance, and one of the interesting sidelines in all of this is how the computer can't read one domain name that the human can easily read until the English or other language is translated into the code the machine can understand. The Psalmist David once said that as long as there was sin in his heart, God would not hear the prayers the king uttered. A lot of people want to argue that God hears everybody's prayers, but maybe that argument is made just to make people feel better about the beneficence of God. After all, who wants to love a God who won't listen? But the Bible is very clear about the Judeo-Christian God not listening to the requests of those who ignore His commands. He did answer the cries of those who were truly repentant of sin, and God did sometimes intervene when sinners didn't ask for the help, but just like to computer that can't read English, God often chooses not to listen to those who live like He isn't important.
