Environmental Education Program

Environmental education provides logical information to communities with the goal of improving the way resources are used for the purposes of maintaining physical and natural resources. One of the most popular sources for this type of program is the NAAEE or North American Association for Environmental Education. The NAAEE is a network of professionals, students, and volunteers working in this field throughout North America and in 55 countries worldwide.

The NAAEE began as a service to instructors in 1971. Their motto is "to provide excellence in environmental education". This is done by offering links to workshops, seminars, conferences, government affairs, latest research, and press releases. They also provide a professional environmental education program. Educators teach in a holistic manner, using diverse teaching methods and a hands-on approach. Opportunities for direct learning in natural, built, and social environments are offered. These opportunities challenge a student to think outside of his or her own sphere of influence.

There is a strong need for a foundation of knowledge about social and ecological systems. The word "ecological" is defined as the interactions and relationships between organisms and their environment. Individuals, communities and corporations alike should be aware of these factors in order to develop the understanding and skills that are necessary for positive behavior towards the biophysical and social environment of every day living. An environmental education program does not just include plants, animals and natural occurrences. It includes buildings, highways, ocean tankers, and automobiles as well as anything else that has the possibility of affecting the ecological system. It is to the human advantage, as individuals, to be aware of the surroundings and the use of the environment.

These programs incorporate a human component in exploring problems and their solutions. There are many skills available to be obtained within environmental education such as: communication, investigation, survey design, library research, interviewing, data analysis, and cooperation just to name a few. These skills can be directly utilized in evaluating and diagnosing problems in the environment. Teaching an environmental education program to this and future generations is the concern of scientists and individuals using the tools and resources of a wide variety of disciplines in order to determine the root of problems and suggest new ways to either prevent or remedy those problems. "And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good. And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so" (Genesis 1:10-11). Because God created the earth, it is the responsibility of humans, and especially Christians, to protect this creation.
