Homemade Dog Food

By Jolie Mitchel

All dog owners want to be sure their pets are well cared for. To do this they must provide proper exercise and seek the opinion of a veterinarian to keep their dog healthy. This also includes making sure their pet is well fed. Many people think that purchasing the best food available is all that is necessary for their pet to live a long and healthy life. It only makes sense to believe that commercial dog food is better for our pets. Unfortunately, this isn't always true.

Dog food companies are in business to make money. They do not have to follow the same regulations that are given to companies that manufacture food for human consumption. They have, instead, their own regulations that are not as stringent. Some of these regulations allow for using some rather unsavory ingredients. This would include things that you would never in your wildest dreams feed to your dog. If you are aware of this situation and you would like to do something about it, then here are some suggestions on how to make sure that your dog is getting the nutrition it needs.

Though it is more time consuming, a lot of pet owners have started making homemade dog food. It does take longer than purchasing ready made food at the store, but the advantages certainly make it worth while. Paying attention to prices will allow you to spend a similar amount to what you spent previously on commercial dog food. Here are some things to take into account when preparing homemade pet food.

A vegetarian diet is ok for dogs. Most people believe dogs require meat in order to stay healthy, but this not actually true. Properly chosen and prepared vegetables will provide your dog all that it needs to prosper. Home made food can sometimes prolong your pet's life. If a human eats fast food everyday, they will not be healthy even if their stomach is full. This senitment also applies to your dog. Homemade food is definitely more healthy.

Some foods are not good for your dog and it is important to take care that they are not eaten. These include macadama nuts, milk products, chocolate, grapes, raisins, and alcoholic beverages. Outside of these restrictions, there is a wide variety of foods you can prepare for your pet.

Taking care of your dog is a lifelong project. Make sure that you are giving them the proper nutrition found in homemade dog food, and the project may just extend for a longer period of time. Your dog will appreciate it.

Though you might think making homemade dog food can set you back financially, you probably already feed your dog table scraps. It is just a matter of budgeting more carefully as you likely, already purchase pet food at the store.

Some people think dogs have different dietary demands, though it is definitely ok to give them homemade food instead of store bought varieties. This is because dogs digest their foods in the same manner as humans and this has not been disputed scientifically.
