Ideas to Bring Comfort When Sick

By Rachel Rae

These are some ideas and suggestions for bringing greater levels of comfort during sick days, mostly in regards to common colds and flu, virus type ills. Always follow your doctor's orders of course. Pick and choose which of these you find to suit yourself best.

The biggest tip when it comes to sick days is being prepared. Stock up on cold remedies that you use, be it thermometers, sinus medication, flu medication, nausea syrup, etc, you don't want to have to make a run to the store when you are feeling ill.

Also stock up on food items that help when you're sick. Try to have homemade chicken soup frozen that can simply be re-heated. Have your supply of saltine crackers, jello, ginger ale and anything else that you tend to eat when ill or just getting over something.

Get some essential oils like eucalyptus, rosemary and peppermint. On those ill days, try soaking in a bathtub with a few drops of those essential oils helps to bring relief. Simmering a few drops of the oils in a low simmer pot, or a couple drops on a lightbulb ring can also help bring relief. Tie some fresh eucalyptus to a shower head to bring a nice touch to a shower.

Make a rice bag sachet. Take a silky or other soft touch fabric and fill it with rice, and perhaps a some lavender flower heads as well. On sick days, zap it in the microwave a few seconds and place it for warmth on any sore muscles, joints, or your neck. The lavender scent is soothing. You can also drop a few drops of lavender essential oil on the fabric itself it you'd like.

Get one of those cold/ice pack masks. Those can also feel very soothing around your eyes at times.

A foot bath is very soothing too, simply soak your feet in warm water with some Epsom salts and a couple drops of essential oil. See if you can find a loved one to rub your feet for an extra special touch.

Stock up on some good books or movies, that you've been wanting to look at; try for light hearted topics where you really don't need to concentrate much and ones that can bring a laugh. Laughter is good for the immune system.

Get lots of rest, plenty of fluids and vitamins. Turn your phones off if at all possible. Take the time you need to recover. So many times it seems like there's no time, but when we're run down and sick, pushing harder many times just delays the healing process.
