Just How Easy to Use are Under the Counter Water Filters?

By Jennifer H. Howard

The plumbing under the counter is where the under the counter water filters are attached directly, as against a direct connection with the faucet that some other water filters of the portable kind have. Not only does an under the counter water filter provide a tap with clean water in the form of a constant supply, it also does not have to be turned off or on and remains out of sight.

The parts required for the installation of an under the counter water filter and the instructions that are relevant are generally supplied along with the filter system. The cold water tap and the main water tap have to be connected with the under the counter water filter through a feed line, even as a there is no requirement for a separate drain line. Compared with the water filters that can be attached with taps, under the counter water filters require considerably more work in terms of installation.

A plumber may be called upon to install an under the counter water filter or the filter system may be installed by home owners within a time period that generally does not exceed an hour. On account of the transparent operation of the under the counter water filter and its being unobtrusive, once it has been installed, besides the counter space that is saved as a result, it is preferred by many people.

Periodically, the cartridge of an under the counter water filter has to be replaced, just like other systems for the filtration of water. It is rather easy to replace the cartridge. A simple set of tasks have to be performed, once the under the counter water filter has been fitted under the sink. The cover generally has to be replaced, after removing the cartridge installed and replacing it with a new one, after unscrewing the cover.

By taking a look under the sink, the pipe through which cold water is being fed to the tap has to be identified, so that an under the counter water filter can be installed. If one is not able to immediately locate the pipe that one is looking for, the process of identification can be helped by a minute or two of the hot tap being kept running. The pipes can then be distinctly identified as the cold and the warm one by touching each of them.

The nut at the base has to be tightened after the clamp has been fitted over the mounting block and the pipe. Taking into account the pipe's diameter, the appropriate side has to be selected, while setting the small mounting block of the clamp on to the pipe. Tubing is attached to the device resembling a small valve, known as saddle valve. The saddle valve clamping device has to be installed on a section of the pipe, after making sure that there is no obstruction or corrosion.

The re-assembled housing of the filter has to be mounted on to the bracket, after installation of the cartridge. The cartridge may simply have to be placed appropriately or to be screwed in. The cartridge has to be installed on to the housing of the filter. The housing bracket of the filter has to be mounted on to the cabinet, at a suitable location, making use of the screws that are supplied with the system. The copper pipe has to be pierced by turning the T-bar handle fully in the clockwise direction. The tube's red end has to be placed in a receptacle, like a bucket, before that.

The water flows to the tap, through the filter housing, from the red tube, after the T-bar of the saddle valve is turned anti-clockwise. The under the counter water filter's housing's output side is connected to the blue tube from the tap. Installation of the tap and the tubing related to it precedes that, along with the connection of the red tube in the bucket with the input side of the filter housing. The drinking water tap or the faucet for the under the counter water filter system is installed, after drilling a hole in the sink or worktop, at a location that is appropriate.
