One of the dreaded problems with laptops is if the LCD is busted or cracked. Should you throw in the towel and get a new one or get it fixed?
In the past it was very, very expensive to replace the LCD screen. So much so that it was more cost effective to just go ahead and replace the entire laptop. With the right resources however you can replace a LCD screen cheaply and effectively.
The major cost of a significant amount of laptops is the LCD screen, although that price is rapidly dropping. Replacement screens can cost from between $150 and $325. With only the largest, most extravagant screens costing significantly more.
There are many different places to buy your replacement laptop screen. There are a few really good LCD superstores like LCDSuper.com that offer very competitive pricing on LCD Screens. Ebay and craigslist remain viable alternatives. And using google shopping can often find very reasonable alternatives.
Of course the cost of getting a replacement LCD screen isn't the only factor you'll face. You also should budget for a competent laptop repair service. Because of the complexity of the repair and the fragility of the parts, I highly recommend not attempting to complete the repair yourself.
What you'll find if you use a computer repair technician who has experience in laptop repairs, is that they'll usually be able to complete the repair in an hour or less. Because each model is different, there are tens of thousands of variations of design and implementation, so your mileage may vary.
I still say don't attempt the repair yourself, but if you decide you want to there are resources out there that can help. First you'll want to find the repair guide for your particular model. This guide should lay out schematics of where all the pressure points and screws are that you'll need to take apart the screen. You'll also need a good set of tools, as some of the screws you'll need to access are very tiny.
At a minimum before you get started, you'll have to weigh the costs of replacing the LCD with replacements costs for the entire laptop. Laptops are cheaper than ever before. You'll have to weigh that against the inconvenience of starting to use a new laptop without your favorite programs or bookmarks. In any case if you have any specific questions about laptop LCD repairs, feel free to email us.
