Masters Degree in Information Security

A masters degree in information security will put anyone on the cutting edge of technological protection whether they work for the government or in the private sector. As computer hackers continue to gain entrance into computers, corrupting files and systems, we need more and more professionals to combat this problem. Earning this education can not only give specialized technology training, but also can prepare a person to preserve various types of information.

If someone decides to pursue this type of education, they will learn a variety of skills and draw from various disciplines. A masters degree in information security will increase knowledge of emerging security threats and solutions, learn to develop information security and develop disaster recovery plans and may also learn to secure operating systems and applications, cryptography, and security protocol. In doing all this, a person will draw from the fields of computer science, mathematics, political science, management information systems and others. A student will not only address the technical issues of information security, but also the social, policy and ethical issues as well.

Because of the continued increased threat to our information systems as hackers themselves become more knowledgeable, there is a tremendous need for skilled professionals that can plan and implement security measures and develop and manage security policies. Someone that earns a masters degree in information security can work in a variety of setting with the knowledge they have gained. They can work in the federal, state or local governments, or in the private sector. Those who work in the private sector often find employment with internet-based companies, software companies, banks, insurance companies, and any other organization that depends heavily on the use of information technology. Isaiah 22:7 says "And it shall come to pass, that thy choicest valleys shall be full of chariots, and the horsemen shall set themselves in array at the gate."

If there is not a university in the area, there are schools online to consider. Many masters degree in information security programs offer distance learning options. When searching for a school that will work, look for some important factors. Consider if the faculty has experience in the field, and whether they are available to contact. Consider if the program offers flexibility to accommodate an already busy schedule. Furthermore, check if the school is accredited by a recognized academic institution. These questions as well as others a person may have probably can be answered by the school's website. However, to get the best view of a program, talk with students and instructors if possible.
