Rockband 2: Rocking Again?

By Paul Geffen

Rockband 2, the newest party game on the block has been released! But does it measure up to its predecessor?

Rockband 2 was released for the XBOX 360 on September 14th to thousands of eagerly awaiting fans. The game is slated to be released later this year for both Sony and Nintendo platforms.

Anything new to Rockband 2?

Harmonix has not altered the basic game from the original Rockband, but they have added several new features and songs in an attempt to provide a new gaming experience for veteran Rockband players.

The main attraction to the sequel is the brand new 84-song playlist for players to unlock, including a track from Guns N' Roses' latest unreleased album. Players are also able to download songs from an ever-growing list direct to their console. Harmonix has also given players the ability to import songs from the original game simply by inserting the original game and choosing 'Export Songs'. Viola! Now you can play over 50 songs from the original game in Rockband 2.

The changes that Rockband 2 brings to the gameplay is not necessarily ground-breaking, but it is modified from the original game.

The introduction of the 'No Fail' mode lets those who want to play a song do so without the chance of failing it. Although it's only available in Quickplay, the mode provides a nice break for those wishing to play a casual party game or who have small children who aren't as adept at playing as their older counterparts.

The Tour mode has also been changed to allow any number of players to play in the band. A band leader is no longer required, allowing players to switch instruments without repercussion.

Basically, Rockband 2 is just a continuation of the first game. It doesn't seek to break any new ground or upset any conventions, but simply expands on an already tested game. Players who enjoyed the first will find the sequel to be as fun, if not more. Slight changes, like the addition and modification of game modes, the increased difficulty of instruments and the new songs to play will have players finding it a worthwhile purchase.
