Signs of clinical depression include exhaustion, insomnia, difficulty concentrating, anxiousness, worry, extreme mood swings, and irritability. Experiencing any of these symptoms for an extended period of time could be an indication that treatment of depression may be needed. An examination by a physician will be necessary to diagnose clinical depression. Loss of interest in daily activities can be an indication of the disease especially when combined with other symptoms. Other things to look for could be weight loss including a decrease in appetite and feelings of restlessness, and loss of energy. Excessive guilt feelings and indecisiveness or any thoughts of death, especially in relation to suicide, should lead one to consult a physician.
A person suffering with signs of clinical depression will often feel that their life just isn't worth living. The outlook for the future is grim and a lot of time is spent analyzing what went wrong. Guilt usually comes into play at this point since it is natural for a person suffering with depressive thoughts to blame themselves. Some people suffering with the disorder have disturbing dreams. Life holds no or little joy for individuals suffering with the disorder and physical pain may manifest itself with no apparent cause for the pain. In the New Testament, Christ says, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). Suffering a major trauma or experiencing stress in life can play a part in some people suffering with the disorder. Other causes can include a chemical or hormonal imbalance.
Traumatic events in life can cause the disorder to manifest in some people's lives but not all. Some people seem to go through traumatic events and not suffer with the disorder while others going through similar circumstances become depressed immediately. Treatment of depression will inevitably be necessary for the person who experiences a negative pattern of thinking. Interpreting reality might very well play a part in the disorder. People who are by nature negative or pessimistic may see their life as hopeless simply because they tend to look at the bad in everything. Adapting positive thinking styles can help with the disorder, especially when practiced over time by trying to see the glass half-full instead of half-empty. Seeking out help through prayer and faith can play a positive part in learning a new way of interpreting reality. As a person learns about Christ and that he is faithful to his promises, a new found sense of trust and hope can help individuals suffering with signs of clinical depression. "Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope" (Acts 2:26).
The possibility of taking anti-depressants should be given careful consideration. A doctor may prescribe anti-depressants to patients suffering with signs of clinical depression but while these drugs help some, they don't seem to help everyone. It is also good to become educated on the side effects associated with some of these drugs, since many do experience these when taking them. Anti-depressants are usually given as a treatment of depression because some studies have indicted that the cause of the disorder could be attributed to low serotonin levels in the brain. It is worth the effort of giving prescription medications a try, especially if suffering with severe symptoms, such as thoughts of suicide. People from all backgrounds, ages, lifestyles, and ethnicities can suffer with the disorder. Suffering with the disorder can put one into a cycle that is hard to break. This cycle can affect one's immune system especially when sleep is deprived and in turn that can affect health thus making the symptoms of the disorder worse. One of the ways doctors often treat the disorder is by prescribing medications that will help the patient sleep. Restorative sleep is important for everyone to maintain a healthy body and mind but it is even more crucial for individuals suffering with depression. Exhaustion can lead to an impaired body and mind making the patient more susceptible to disease and chronic pain.
Experiencing a major illness, especially when coupled with pain may cause an individual to need treatment of depression. Chronic pain can deprive one of restorative sleep and make doing everyday tasks seem almost impossible. When dealing with pain issues it is vital that the individual seeks the answers to why there is pain and what can be done to help it. An appointment should be made with a physician where the discussion should take into consideration the well-being of the patient through finding a way to find relief from pain, obtain restorative sleep, and get relief from signs of clinical depression.
