Sports Management Degree

Sports management degree programs within institutions of higher learning are becoming more popular in order to cater to those prospective students that are looking for a career in a related field. There is $195 billion spent nationally on activities, and colleges are competing for free-agent sports minded students. In order to be considered for admissions, an applicant must have the passion and excitement for the sport industry. They are offered at certificates, associates, bachelors, masters and doctoral levels. It is critical that sports management degree graduates are involved in the development of learning scopes through outside organizations.

The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business has accredited only five national programs. Sports management degrees are labeled as a type of business administration degree. The accreditation of the Association would recognize this degree as suitable to all businesses, not just those in sports. This is like granting two degrees in one. The sports management degree focuses on the demands involved in the operation of these programs at numerous levels. Professional preparation is needed in order to effectively manage the growth and change in this industry.

In addition to the core business classes required such as accounting, marketing, basic management, business law, economics, history, business communications, and natural sciences, there are a host of other sports management degree specific classes. Sports management degrees incorporate physical education, facility and event management, legal aspects, promotion, psychological and sociological, and organizational administration and evaluation in health and physical education. Students are expected to participate in at least two team activities and gain an internship with a facility to allow for real life experience and in house training. God instructs us to use our time wisely on earth and to not be lazy. Pursuing a degree in the area that God has blessed a person is a great way to start using God-given talents.

With internship training and experience in team events on the resume, a graduate can enter into any number of areas in this field. Some typical job duties may involve working with businesses in special events promotions or sponsorship, accounting ticketing, financial operations of a sporting event or function, or developing a risk management plan for dealing with legal issues. Sport broadcasting and media relations are also popular directions to head. Other job opportunities presented to the graduates of sports management degrees are sporting goods sales, or the sale of licensed sports products. In addition to working where a graduate's passion lies, the health and wellness benefits for those employed in a sport related industry are usually excellent and surpass those of a typical business job.
