Wii Fit: More Than a Game?

By Michael Kentag

Nintendo sure had a great idea with the Wii. It has become a sensation that is not easily purchased. Due to the reasonable price, this console has been flying off shelves. One recent development is the creation of a game that keeps track of weight and body mass statistics while allowing users to exercise in many different ways. It has become fairly popular and certainly can be beneficial to typically couch-potato-gamers.

Necessary to perform its weight measurements, is the Wii Balance Board. This is the hardware unit sold in conjunction with the Wii Fit software component. It resembles a house scale and is used to measure various statistics. These include center of gravity, weight, and body mass index. Wii Fit Balance Boards in the United States can hold people up to 330 pounds.

One way to keep track of your activities and progress is the "Wii Fit Age" system. Based on your performance on various tests and your vital statistics (weight, BMI, etc.), the system will calculate your standings. You can set goals for yourself and customize your workout with a favorite activities list. You can also use the activities log to help track how your chosen activities affect your "Fit Age."

There are many activities you can use this game for. Many people enjoy practicing Yoga on the Wii. Some positions you can practice include half-moon, cobra, and palm tree. You can also use it for deep breathing and various other Yoga techniques.

Strength training is another feature of the Wii Fit. It incorporates leg and arm extensions, lunges, squats, and push-ups for a varied work-out regimen. Other activities that you can try include parallel stretches, jackknife challenges, and plank challenges. This would be a great tool for a high school athlete, or any athlete for that matter!

Another area that is available on the Wii Fit program is balance training. Through various activities, you can improve and practice your balance. Some activities include ski and snowboard activities, tightrope walking, and lotus focus. In the last, you must stay still while looking at a flame.

In addition to these great features, you can also keep checking your progress and Wii Fit age. In this way, you are able not only to maintain a workout schedule, but also keep and eye on your health. Considering how, lately, children play more and more video games, this could certainly help with childhood obesity. This is a great idea because it makes exercise enjoyable for all ages.

By combining fun and exercise into one package, Nintendo has created a new use for game consoles. It has been said that games promote inactivity, but this is one game that seeks to rectify that. Children and adults can benefit from the exercise available in the Wii Fit program. This will certainly open up the possibilities in future gaming enterprises!
