Cable Companies Facing Competition from Verizon FiOS

By D.L. Demazzier

FIOS, the new fiber optic network of Verizon, has caused strife for cable companies as existing customers move to the newer service. The speed and reliability of FIOS is beyond compare, and they are offering it for the same price.

Cable has battled back in response to the competition by offering free services and other incentives, and they have implemented "boost" and metro ethernet technology. They are aiming to double the speed that they are offering now by creating new and improved technology.

This new technology would allow the cable companies to utilize their existing infrastructure and lines to provide the upgraded speed. The new system basically resides at the source of the communication at the cable company's headquarters.

The main complaints from cable customers concern the bandwidth caps on their connections if they have sustained high usage over a few hours. Recently, cable companies have removed this cap. Customers though, have not noticed the change. The main issue this cap was targeting was those customers using shareware software.

The problem affected many customers, and trying to get the cap removed took a lot of effort and time on behalf of cable subscribers. There were also issues with heavy internet usage in neighborhoods which affected customer's service, as well as issues with bad weather.

With FIOS, bandwidth is no longer an issue. The Fiber Optic networks of Verizon have no limits and compared to what cable offers through their coaxial copper networks, the FIOS system is far superior. Cable customers making the switch were no longer faced with bandwidth frustrations.

While some FIOS customers might have had installation problems as Verizon desperately tried to catch up to demand, overall reliability has been well above average. And the best part about it is that the infrastructure is brand new, meaning little or no service interruption once you are up and running.

Cable companies should be paying close attention to what Verizon is offering through their FIOS service. Changes need to be made in their infrastructure and the first place to start would be with their outdated copper system. Maybe some good could come of their updates if they bundled the old copper and used it in a recycling program.
