Fire Protection Degree

A fire protection degree is the answer for anyone who has ever thought about becoming involved in the community or government as a firefighter. They are available at the associate, bachelor and master levels. Some programs require student employment with a fire agency for admission. That is, a student must be working with the local fire department in some fashion. Many students will train to become emergency medical technicians and work for the department before enrolling in an educational program, although not all programs require this. Emergency medical training, administration, firefighter certification and investigator certification are all part of the curriculum in this field of study.

Those studying in this area will learn an enormous amount of information about the element of all types of blazes, the environment and their effects on people. Courses typically offered toward fire protection degrees include smoke detection and management and fire dynamics. Additionally, students will also take courses in forestry and ecology. Any fire official is aware of the environment and its changes in order to continue fighting and containing fires to save lives, land and materials. Some students may choose to continue their fire protection degree and move into engineering. These engineers help to develop the technology and machinery required to control fires. A bonus to continuing on this path is the salary; the median salary for these engineers is slightly higher than those in other engineering fields.
