Franchise Restaurant

Franchise restaurants are available throughout the country and the world with prepackaged business plans, training and support throughout the life of the business. Before investing, both pros and cons should be weighed. They use the same products and brand names to attract customers and maintain their loyalty as every other business in that chain. Fast food businesses are probably the most notorious for being known as a franchise restaurant. They create an image or gimmick that will keep customers returning. There are both pros and cons of this type of business option. Positive aspects include repeat customers, recognized brands, and marketing. Negatively, however, the prepackaged plan does not allow for creative freedom when it comes to food, location, atmosphere, and a variety of other facets of the business. While there are many positive aspects, the negatives are not as explored and often do not surface until it is too late to turn back.

From a creative point of view, a franchise restaurant does not allow an owner to explore variety that varies from the brand's predetermined plan, beginning with the food on the menu. By creating a new eating establishment with a new image, the owner has the ability to go anywhere and do anything. The food can be diverse from day to day if the owner or operator so chooses. The food supply for franchise restaurants is often shipped by truckloads to the restaurants and changes of the menu are not even an option. Also, there are many constraints that may be faced, like the location. Often, a franchise will only locate in certain areas of neighborhoods or cities. Sometimes there has to be a certain number of people or certain demographic that has to be met before the brand headquarters will think about locating in a city. With a locally-owned business, the owner can choose where to locate without authorization from a higher authority.

Decorating a franchise restaurant is a very big issue. Most have a certain decor that is recognizable to the brand. Sometimes the decoration of the store is as famous as the food on the menu. There is much more freedom with a self-started food establishment to decorate in any style or design that suits the owner's interests. Franchise restaurants can be a great way to begin a career in the restaurant business, but they also prohibit creative freedom that many people may desire in restaurants. A franchise restaurant offers many tools that may not be available through a self contained business, but for a creative entrepreneur, often these tools do not outweigh the negative aspects. "Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man is great upon him" (Ecclesiastes 8:6). A potential owner should carefully consider the creative input they feel they must have before choosing to take on a predetermined and controlled franchise opportunity.
