Travelers need one way car rentals for a variety of reasons. But this is definitely an option that requires planning and research to avoid paying unnecessary costs. Anytime an individual rents a vehicle, he should pay attention to the rental agreement and restrictions. For example, he will want to know what his insurance policy covers when it comes to renting vehicles. His credit card issuer may also have certain policies and protections when the credit card is used for renting a vehicle. Knowing this information will help him decide whether to purchase additional insurance through the rental agency. If someone else may be driving the car, the rental agent needs to know that person's name and other pertinent information. There may be an additional fee and may be age restrictions for drivers. The person renting the vehicle will also want to know if there are restrictions about driving to another state. When it comes to one way car rentals, the driver also will want to ask about drop-off charges. The agency may charge an additional fee if the vehicle is returned to a location other than where it was picked up. However, if the drop off location is in the same general area as the pick up location, this charge may be waived. For example, in major tourist areas it is common for travelers to rent a vehicle at the airport and then leave it at a nearby hotel or vice versa. The agency probably won't charge a drop off fee in this type of situation.
Prospective renters have a couple of options when it comes to reserving one way car rentals. If the individual has a membership in an automobile association or other type of travel club, this may be the first place to look for good deals on renting a vehicle. The phone directory can provide names and phone numbers of available agencies so the consumer can call to find out about the costs and restrictions of renting a vehicle for a one way trip. One of the best places to do research is on the websites of either the individual rental agencies or popular travel companies. Individuals who have access to frequent travel awards will want to start with accessing this option. If the distance between the pick up and drop off location is pretty far, the traveler will almost always need to rent the vehicle from a major, national agency. The individual may need to research which companies have offices in both the pick up and drop off location to avoid any hassles in returning the vehicle to the company. As the Proverbs writer said all those centuries ago: "Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is hard. Every prudent man dealeth with knowledge: but a fool layeth open his folly" (Proverbs 13:15-16). Knowledge helps consumers make prudent, rather than foolish, decisions.
After arranging one way car rentals, travelers have additional responsibilities when taking possession of the vehicle. Some of these issues were addressed above -- the consumer should carefully review the rental agreement and any restrictions with the agent. Consumers are advised to ask about additional discounts or any hidden fees. The agent should be able to provide a complete listing of all charges for the rental. Before taking the keys, the consumer should also ask about support services. Who should she call if the vehicle breaks down on the trip? What should she do if the vehicle is involved in an accident? Knowing the answers can provide peace of mind should either of these events actually happen while on the road. For both round trip and one way car rentals, the agent will do a walk-around of the rented vehicle and make notes of any body damage. The consumer should do this, too, and should be sure that the agent marks down every single ding. This protects consumers from being charged for damage that didn't occur while they had the vehicle in their possession. The agent will also mark how much gasoline is in the tank. The renter is responsible for returning the car to the agency with the same amount of gas. If not, the agency will add this expense at a higher cost per gallon than the local gas stations. Travelers should always keep their copy of the paperwork and accompany the agent at the drop off location on an inspection of the vehicle. This is especially important with one way car rentals since the agent at the drop off location will not have the original paperwork. The agent may have a faxed copy or a copy printed from a computer site. The renter can then be sure that the agent has an identical copy of the paperwork in her possession.
Before driving the vehicle off the lot, the consumer should take a few moments to get familiar with the car. This advice is valid for everyone, whether contracting for round trip or one way car rentals. She should locate such features as the windshield wipers, the cruise control, and the headlights. The driver's seat needs to be appropriately adjusted so that the driver can comfortably reach the floorboard pedals and has good visibility through the windshield. The rearview and side mirrors also need to be adjusted to minimize the driver's side blind spot as much as possible. It's even a good idea to go ahead and set the radio to the driver's favorite stations. Taking the time to become comfortable with the layout of the vehicle's dashboard before putting the gear in drive will help the driver react appropriately in any emergency situations that may come up on the drive. After taking care of all the finances, checking out the condition of the vehicle, and becoming comfortable in the driver's seat, the consumer is ready to leave the lot behind and head toward her destination.
When it comes to one way car rentals, good deals can sometimes be found in certain markets. For example, agencies often need to move fleets out of Florida to northern destinations in late spring and early summer. Non-Floridians who come across these good deals (which can be found by doing appropriate internet searches) may choose to fly to the Sunshine State and then drive back home. Floridians may select to drive to one of the rental company's destinations, enjoy a few days of vacation, and then fly home. No matter one's travel plan, advance planning and research, careful inspection of the rental vehicle, and familiarity with the car will help pave the road to a great travel experience.
