Professional Disability Insurance

Professional disability insurance is a type of coverage that protects an employee against the loss of wages typically associated with an accident or illness claim. A professionals disability insurance claim will be reviewed by a policy adjustor and an approval or denial will be determined. The information that should be provided along with a claim include: a doctors note, estimated time needed to heal, type of work done before the accident or illness, when and where the injury happened, and regular salary amounts. If more information is required, the policy claim adjustor will contact the policyholder, or the policyholders' place of employment.

Life has a way of throwing things at us at the most unexpected times, making advance preparation a valuable tool. Professional disability insurance should be purchased once gainfully employed by a company or organization. Should any injury occur that would eliminate the possibility of the employee to continue working, the professionals disability insurance will pay the employee for a determined amount of time or until the employee is able to return to work in a regular fashion. Some companies offer this coverage as part of an employment package, meaning that the employer pays the premiums on the policy. Sometimes, an employer will be able to find another job within the same company for the employee to perform to keep them from having to file a claim.

There are times when the company does not pick up the cost of this coverage. If the employee is paying his own professional disability insurance premiums, then he should be aware that the higher the salary earned the closer to that salary amount the coverage should be under the policy, and the higher the policy premiums will be. In addition to the amount of coverage desired, a professionals disability insurance policy should include a determined elimination date. The elimination date is the amount of days that need to pass before a policyholder can begin to receive regular payments from their policy. These days range from 0-120.

It is important to use good sense when considering this coverage. Some Christians are apprehensive about purchasing professional disability insurance. They may feel that the purchase of any coverage shows a lack of faith in God's ability to protect and provide for them. While the Bible does not refer to the purchase of insurance as good or bad, it does suggest a person prepare himself for future disaster. What goes up must come down, and health today, may mean injury tomorrow. If it is financially feasible, the purchase of this coverage is a wise choice. "And let them gather all the food of those good years that come, and lay up corn under the hand of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities. And that food shall be for store to the land against the seven years of famine, which shall be in the land of Egypt; that the land perish not through the famine." (Genesis 41:35-36)
