Cutlery - Using Your Cutlery to Set a Fine Table

By William Maxwell

Many people have no idea of what they should do with the cutlery sets that they have on hand, tucked away in drawers or chests. When you spy the place settings on display, so elegant and so creatively displayed, there is nothing for you to consider, you must buy them. The intent to use this cutlery and impress your friends and family is plainly in mind, but often there is a tremendous breakdown between your desired intent and the accomplishment of the task.

Table settings and the etiquette that inspired them for years is often overlooked today because instead of using china and cutlery settings of silver or stainless, it is easier to grab the plastic flatware and paper plates. Perhaps the only time you are able to actually enjoy the home dining table in full splendor is during a once a year celebration or holiday. Many people regret their inability to set a perfect table even then and the beautifully styled cutlery is neglected.

Meal times are to be shared with those we love and to spend time with them while enjoying good food and conversation. These times can be shared and made even more memorable if we not only set a proper table, complete with cutlery arranged properly, and teach our children the proper method also. In this way you will both be able to convey a sense of proper decorum and they will learn useful skills that will serve them well in the future.

If you will choose to use these rules of etiquette with most of your meals you will be able to take advantage of opportunities to use your better cutlery more often You will enjoy the compliments of your family and friends because they will definitely notice and appreciate what you are doing The compliments that will come your way will be a huge bonus for you for your efforts. A good thing to remember is that once you learn how to set a proper table with cutlery you will have learned a lifetime skill that will stand you in good stead forever.

Each piece of cutlery is arranged according to which will be used first as the order of the meal progresses. This one rule is followed today. In the days of the Victorians, there were often numerous individual cutlery items. In those times there were sumptuous dining experiences, offering dozens of courses. There was no such thing as too many pieces being available. Today you will find many of these contrivances in the antique stores. They had implements for pickles, vegetables, meat and seafood, in addition to numerous others.

Table settings still follow many of the same rules that have existed for years. The most basic rule of all is knife and spoon on the right and forks on the left. This is the most basic of all requirements. With this rule to guide you, you can't go wrong. This means that on your far right is your soup spoon and to the right of that, is a knife with blade facing inward. There is an exception with a seafood or cocktail fork, if this is used, it will be to the far right. This arrangement allows for the implements for each dish to be readily available for soups, salads and main courses. There are even more rules that can be learned for the proper setting of a table but this gives you the basic understanding to expand upon.

You will only need to make the rest of your table service look as good as your cutlery settings. You may choose a cloth for covering the entire dining table, this could be any type of cloth as long as it is of nice fabric and appropriate for the situation at hand. There also needs to be quality china arranged with care. A fine centerpiece and candles would add a nice touch to your meal as well.

No matter whether you choose a distinctive formal style or a more casual feel, you will be happy with the outcome, become more confident in your skills and enjoy a relaxing meal. You will also have many more times available to you that you can enjoy your beautiful pieces.
