What Makes a Good Wrinkle Cream?

By Geoff Hopkins

The best wrinkle cream, in my opinion, is a water-based cream. There are several on the market that promise firmer, tighter, skin, but they leave such a residue on skin, hands, and often stain clothes that I would never want to use them.

A water-based wrinkle cream is the best wrinkle cream because the skin more readily absorbs it. Oil-based creams may appear to make the skin soft, but they also trap dirt in the pores and can increase acne with use. Water-based creams also do not leave the oily residue, which is often the case with the other types of creams.

Companies which produce wrinkle creams employ marketing firms to promote their products. You can be sure that these marketing firms will use every trick in the book to spice up their advertising and make it more appealing to potential customers. The problem is, the advertising they generate is often misleading. Using phrases like "anti-aging" and "appear younger" definitely entices customers who are obsessed with their looks. These people are easily convinced to hand over large chunks of change for these miracle products, when they could have bought something just as effective, and far cheaper, at a local discount store.

So, why do some wrinkle creams work better than others? We've found out it certainly isn't the price! As mentioned earlier, water-based creams are more easily absorbed by the skin, so they are able to penetrate to the deepest layers of the skin providing longer-lasting hydration and repairing skin damage. Why wouldn't a water-based cream work best? After all, our bodies are mostly water to start with.

It doesn't matter what a cream calls itself, skin cream is skin cream. While water-based creams cost more than the plain old hand lotions available at a discount store, a good hand lotion can actually achieve the same, or even better, results as the costlier products.

It's important to keep your skin healthy. Skin is the barrier between bacteria which cause disease and the body. Healthy skin doesn't allow the transmission of diseases this way. Healthy skin also doesn't end up cracking and bleeding during cold weather, and if you are employed in a profession that makes you prone to nicks and scrapes, healthier skin will be more pliant and press in instead of breaking.

Why are some wrinkle creams better than others? The additives that are in creams provide benefits to the skin. Aloe provides softer skin because it penetrates more deeply into the skin and results in healthier skin that is more likely to retain moisture. With some of the creams that contain alcohol (so they do not leave a residue), they actually dehydrate the skin and cause more harm than good.

Creams that are both hypoallergenic and water-based seem to offer the best solution for dehydrated skin. Being hypoallergenic means that people with sensitive skins won't develop allergic reactions. The first time you use a water-based cream on dry skin, you'll find that it keeps being drawn into the skin. You will need to take your time to make sure that all of your skin becomes fully hydrated again. After that, only minimal upkeep will keep your skin hydrated, healthy, and pliable.
