Halloween activities are generally activities geared around scary fright nights and the favorite games and parties are the ones that evoke hair-raising fear. On the day that Americans celebrate the dark, ghoulish parties are on everyone's mind and most are planning to attend a haunted house, theme costume party, or plan a trick. There are many, however, that want to join the festivities, but are looking for something a little less frightening to take part in, protecting children from the sometimes shocking events and sights that prowl throughout this hallowed eve. What are good suggestions that present Halloween alternatives to the frightening and dark side of this occasion? Well, there are a few ideas that can be discussed, but a real investigation will reveal that, for Christians at least, Halloween should be discerned as an occasion to be avoided.
Finding something that's safe and fun to entertain children on the 31st of October is a priority for most Christian families. Halloween alternatives are a great idea, as long as the alternative is not a just a milder version of the original celebration. Wearing a "non-scary" costume, but celebrating the dark side of death is not really making progress. Let's take a look at the truth of dark and light; heaven and hell; good and evil, and make decisions based on what glorifies God and what does not. First, for a look into the realities of heaven and hell, take the Heaven and Hell Quiz.
Second, look at what God has to say about His people mingling with practices that glorify the dark side of spiritual reality, such as Halloween activities. "And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them." (Ephesians 5:11) Once the nation of Israel left Egypt and headed for the land God had provided for them, He warned them to not take part in the ceremonies and activities of the nations in the land, which were centered around spirits of the dead, sorcery, and witchcraft, and for His people to be different, standing apart for what was good. "When thou art come into the land which the Lord thy God give thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations." (Deuteronomy 18:9)
In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul the apostle spoke to the young church about aligning themselves, as innocent as it seemed, with the habits and activities of the world around them. "Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with darkness?" (2 Corinthians 6:14) Many Halloween activities lean to the dark side of matters and many alternatives also lean towards evoking fear. The writer of Hebrews taught that Christ came so that all who believe might have freedom from fear. "And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subjects to bondage." (Hebrews 2:15)
This Halloween, while researching Fall festivals or other parties that are geared towards children on this particular day, Christians will need to keep in mind that any Halloween alternatives should be alternatives that in no way resemble the original celebration. Those interested in finding out more about Halloween alternatives and having a healthy Christian perspective on Halloween should research the many websites offering information on the origins of this celebration and take the quiz linked above.
