Halloween Crafts

Halloween craft ideas are on the minds of teachers, day-care workers, stay at home moms, and party plans are on the minds of anyone wanting to celebrate the dark holiday spirit. Americans spend over $20 million dollars in candies, Halloween crafts, and greeting cards annually, during the month of October, making black and orange party supplies and associated goods big business dollars. Paper black cats and witches hats seem innocent enough, as children cut out images of ghostly characters to hang on walls and paste to windows, but, Christians are asking if introducing children to the idea of elevating the dark side of the supernatural is really just innocent child's play.

Many will never even stop to contemplate what taking part in these specific fall festivals is all about. Halloween craft ideas of colored paper and glue sticks seem fun, harmless, and an opportunity to celebrate the crisp fall air and coming of winter. And in the minds of innocent children, it is just another day to celebrate with candy and parties. Or, is it? Many people, Christians included, argue that the celebration of Halloween is a matter of perspective or relativity. Defenders of the fright night argue that if one does not believe that this night of celebrating the dead is wrong then, Halloween is not a bad night to commemorate. Would this theory hold true for a child molester who believed that harming a child was okay? Is anything okay as long as one thinks it's okay? Think again.

For a realistic look at Halloween crafts and parties, take a look into the Bible. In his letter to the Thessalonians, the apostle, Paul addressed the Thessalonians about issues that sound familiar to those of us living in this century. The church in Thessalonica was new and easily swayed in their beliefs, believing in Christ, but finding it difficult to separate Christ's truths from the cultural norms they were so familiar with. Paul specifically instructs the young church to not only stop committing evil acts, but to not be associated with anything evil, and to test everything by the light of Christ. "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil." (1 Thessalonians 5:21-22)

As harmless as taking part in many of these activities may be, Satan, the great deceiver will use anything to lure a child into a fascination with evil. Why take the chance of introducing a child into an interest of witches and warlocks? Halloween craft ideas are used by the pretty crafty Satan in planting the seeds of suspense and drama, all to the ultimate end of his, (Satan's) purpose, which is to discredit God and exalt himself. "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:" (1 Peter 5:8)

Before planning an October 31st party or mapping the trick or treat strategy plan, give this celebration a second thought. While searching for Halloween crafts, consider what Satan tempted Jesus with in Matthew 4:9. "All things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me." or what Paul meant when he wrote to the Corinthians, "But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God." (2 Corinthians 4:2) Arts and crafts are great, but before indulging in Halloween crafts, take time to introduce the truth of what God expects to His children.
