Halloween fun allows children to go door to door and get loads of candy, taking part in a fun-filled October festival. Normal Halloween games center around bobbing for apples and pie eating contests. The days leading up to October 31st are filled with school carnivals and carving contests that have kids enjoying themselves. But, discovering where many of these activities surrounding this holiday originated from can make participants think twice before taking part, again. This holiday is celebrated because in the 800's the Druids used to celebrate October 31st as a time of the evil spirits and the dead. Although bobbing for apples seems harmless now, it is what it represents that matters the most.
Many people would never think twice about dressing up like witches or goblins and going door to door. Amazingly, things that are offensive at other times of the year are considered child's play during this event. When Halloween games involve scary haunted houses and playing tricks on people, a true demonstration of what is represented is evident. An element of terror is added to every activity. This also comes when one find that the candy represents eyeballs or other things that will bring shock value to the table. Click the link to take a quiz about Halloween.
So, are frightening things pleasant? Is Halloween fun really that fun? Is it enjoyable to see how gross this holiday can get? Events surrounding this day have gotten more and more caught up in the concept of terror and scariness. And, so all Christians must ask themselves if this is an event that they should take part in. Should Christians be involved in such a holiday that allows for such thoughts on death? "But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived." (2 Timothy 3:13)
When making decisions about family value and what is being taught to children, step back and look at the importance of rejecting the holiday altogether. Halloween games should not be changed to fit a Christian theme. Rather, all Halloween fun ought to be put aside and not celebrated in a Christian household as the Lord tells us to keep from the things of evil. "Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water." (Hebrews 10:22) This holiday is deeply rooted in that which is Satanic and dead. As Christians, we should be celebrating life in that Christ has given us freedom from the evil that is represented on this day.
