Anyone can donate furniture to charity and find a useful way to dispose of existing furniture while helping the less fortunate. Most cities have organizations that will help people find the right charitable cause to donate furniture to. A person can seek information from the local phonebook for either a thrift shop, Goodwill or Salvation Army that will allow anyone to make donations. Even some local high school drama departments and community theaters will allow people to make furniture donations for set decorations. Most of these organizations will offer pickup services where someone will come to the donors house to receive the donated items. "But follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart." (2 Timothy 2:22)
Making donations of any kind can offer great tax benefits to the individual. If someone is planning to claim a tax deduction when they donate furniture to charity, they must make sure to get a receipt. They must also itemize all the items that are donated if the donation is over two hundred and fifty dollars. If the fair market value is over five hundred dollars, the individual must have a written statement from the charity stating exactly what was donated, how and when the items were originally acquired, and what it cost. The consumer must keep this receipt in a safe place after making any donations so they will have it ready to file with their income taxes the following year. It is also important to attach Internal Revenue Service Form 8283 to the tax return to show how the items were used.
Now is a wonderful time to provide money, food, clothing, shelter, and other assistance to people and organizations in need. As the country has rallied around the victims of hurricanes, tsunamis, floods, and wars, thousands of people are without homes and furniture. If someone has furniture they are not currently using, they should consider calling one of the many organizations that will allow them to donate furniture to charity. This type of charitable program is a viable option toward helping others in need. If someone is thinking about remodeling a living room, bedroom or family room and don't know what to do with the old pieces, they should think about offering these items to a local family in need or a charitable organization that can provide this furniture to others. Just because something is seen as junk or useless to one person, does not mean that it will be useless to someone else.
